You're dad got ripped off. You need to go to Corvetteforum.com and take a look at the prices forum dealers are offering. For 75k, you'd have a lot of change left over and a Z06. I would say most people do not have the skill to take a Z06 at its absolute limit.

Buying an 08Z and putting 20 grand into it wouldn't be better. You'd probably be worse off.

1. You wouldn't have factory warranty.
2. You'd have a compromised ride quality.
3. What parts are you going to buy for $20,000? If I recall there are no force induction modifications to a VQ35HR yet.
4. If you're trying to get over 500hp on a VQ35HR, you probably need to have a built engine which means you're spending way more than $20,000.
5. You probably wouldn't get the same gas mileage as the Corvette which is pretty impressive for a V8.

I would say that even a Nismo Z wouldn't outhandle a 08+ Z51 Corvette.

 

there is actually a twin turbo kit on the market for the HR. The kit plus a programmer, and fuel system would end up being around 20k. The HR also has stronger internals than the DE so it can handle a larger amount of boost, so 500HP with stock internals is possible

 

Good choice on the nismo. I dont think youll regret it. I cant believe u even considered a Civic Si!!!
