Default Nitrous Reliability vs Turbo/Supercharger

Okay so I did search for something like this and didn't find anything. Might get flamed for my noobish question but I'm gonna ask anyway.

How do nitrous kits compare to TT and SC kits in terms of reliability? From what I can tell, the TT and SC kits seem to be significantly more complicated, harder to maintain, and maybe even harder on the engine from day to day? Am I wrong about this?

How much stress/wear and tear does a 100 shot nitrous kit that's done right with quality parts cause? Obviously there's not an exact answer to this question but can anyone give me an idea?

I've always been the person to think nitrous kits are the road to blowing up an engine but now that I'm older and understand how cars actually work, it doesn't seem like such a ridiculous thing to do... And I might even go so far as to say Turbo's and Superchargers are more "ridiculous" than a nitrous kit. I don't know what I'm talking about though so if I'm wrong someone please tell me.

I want to confirm my assumption.. If I install a nitrous kit and never used it, my engine would never know the difference...right? Sounds like a dumb question but its the reason I am starting to think a nitrous kit could potentially be less wear and tear on the engine because TT's and SC's are ALWAYS on, in a sense, so if you don't have a good a$$ tune things are bound to go wrong eventually...

If I did get a nitrous kit I would maybe spray it once a month or something so I'm thinking my engine might like me more if I just sprayed it once a month instead of putting some blowers on it.. Any opinions?

Engine reliability is important to me. Maybe I shouldn't get forced induction at all and if that is your recommendation, please post it!

Thanks to anyone who responds to my long and stupid post. I really appreciate it.

They can all be harmful and depends on how you drive it. Have you ever seen nitrous backfires? As far as ALWAYS ON, yeah that's not true since you would have to put a type a load on the engine for it go to into boost. You can cruse all day with a vortech and not get into boost. If you want to go IF then go IF. I would get a vortech and don't turn up the boost like most people do then wonder why they have a blown engine.

You shouldn't do forced induction at all.

But if you DO decide to spray just do it right... it can be very safe/ reliable WITH the proper supporting mods and a good dyno tune, but if you think you can just hook a bottle up and blast off you'll be shopping for a new block soon

Not to thread steal. But.. How safe would it be for me to run a 75 shot on a high mileage vq35de? (135k miles) obviously I'm on a downward slope with my performance.. But would this end it for sure?

nitrous is very safe and reliable, if done right. just like anything else, boost a car wrong you will be getting a new engine. Put nitrous on wrong you will be buying an engine. It is all the same. I have ran tons in other cars, it gets expensive, so I went to turbo charging. You just have to think about what you want in the long run. Most people think nitrous will be ok I will not use it much. then they get addicted to the power and use it more and more often. A year later they could have boosted it for the same money they just spent and have the power all the time.

^^^pretty much this. The rub is that many folks on paper believe N2O is cheaper (true up front on the basic kit). Guess what...to be safe to takes more add-ons. Kit+various add-ons+tune you can be in that 2500-3500$ range depending + ongoing fills. What nitrous does have going for it is overall simplicity imho.

Turbo, SC, spray = all take the NA motor out of manufacturer spec. With that carries inherent risk. It is all in how you manage that risk and how much money you are willing to spend to hedge against it. But in the end there is always some risk (i.e uh-oh wrong osiris map, how did I lose my fuel pressure, damn i sprayed above my tuned psi, prolly shouldn't have set the full 100 shot @ 2100rom..etc)

I just dropped my car to a shop for a nitrous build a I had to weigh the exact same options. My build is a little more extensive then most for nitrous but I'm well under a sc or turbo kit price...even after install, tune and I'm going direct port vs. spraying down the intakes which is a lot more labor and parts involved. I plan on going up to a 250-300 shot after beefing up the internals so dp was ideal for handling bigger shots.

Im only home 1 week out of the month so i wont have my foot in then firewall that often so nitrous wont be used that much. Spending 15k wasn't worth it to me since the car mostly sits Imo. Maybe if i was home every weekend and driving the car sc or turbo would have looked a little better and i can enjoy spending 15k-20k.

I like a car that looks like a sleeper when you pop the hood or hear it driving by. Im a drag racer at heart so nitrous is perfect for me and my application.

It's never about what does the least amount of damages to the motor but more so how deep are your pockets, future plans and what you use the car for.
