Yeah. There are two different ones... one to use aftermarket amps with the Bose HU and one to use the stock amps/speakers with an aftermarket HU I believe.

ah. My friend has a Alpine flip out touch screen but I don't know if he wants to use aftermarket amps or stock amp. If he changes the head unit and uses different amps and speakers, does he need one of those harnesses?

Nope... if he uses aftermarket everything, I'd suggest just getting one of those OEM harness things so you don't have to splice the OEM harness.
