then i'll just have to buy a regular camera for still shots and keep the camcorder for videos. . .i still need to figure out how to convert my videos to a more widely used format. . .when i download from camcorder to comp. it comes up as .M2TS format. . .know anything about that. . .anyone. . ?

Sounds like you need to use the software that came with the camera and export it as a more widely-used format.
