Default window tint law

I just bought a used 03 Z and the previous owner had all of the windows tinted. I know in michigan it is illegeal to have the front driver and passenger windows tinted. but what is the ticket? just a fix it? or is there a fine and or points associated with it? thanks!

What's the % of tint on the windows, if more than 35%, you should be OK.

The fines for tinted windows differs from city to city, some treat it as 'fit-it' ticket (where if you don't fix it, then it becomes a 'fines' ticket), others are 'fines' ticket. No points associated with tinted windows violation.

BTW, congrat on getting your Z. Is this the Z from your family member that you refer in the post on tranny warrenty? You should attend our Detroit Z meet this summer, our members love meets.

Rgd,

Yeah Mickey thats the one. I am not too sure what percent the tint is. Its hard to tell because he actually had the windshield tinted (medical reasons) so it all looks really dark. I figured i would for sure get the windshield tint removed and then if it was a fix-it ticket just wait till i got pulled over to remove the rest, instead of paying for all that removal at once. make sense?

is the detroit meet info posted here?

if you were glasses or contacts, you should be able to get a form from the department of transportation that gets signed by your optometrist, all you have to tell your optomistrist is the sun bothers your eyes. thats what i did in PA after getting pulled over 4 times in less than a mile one friday night for my window tint in my VW. Needless to say because of that car i know basically all the Cambria county state troopers on a first name basis

The law used to state (I say used to because it's been a long time since I've checked it) that the rear windows behind the driver can all be tinted to a certain percentage. The side windows and windshield can only have the topmost 4" tinted. But I have completely forgotten if the percenage allowed is 20% or 35%.

I really don't think the darkness is really an issue, unless it's REALLY dark, but the side windows (just having them tinted) are the normal target of tickets.

I've gotten the ticket before. The cost isn't that bad....$100 or so. Removing the tint is the real b!tch. And then, of course, after the officer signs off that the tint was removed.....re-tinting them. What was interesting was that I got caught for speeding, and the officer thought he was being nice by giving me a tint ticket in lieu of a speeding ticket. I would much rather have gotten the points and paid the speeding ticket.

If you like the tint.....leave it. If you get a ticket, then remove it. It's not that big of a deal really.
