Default Berk Test Pipe Emission question

I'm looking to purchase a 2006Z, and noticed that in the description, it says Berk Test Pipes. My question is, will the car pass the emissions test here in Massachusetts? I love the car, but just don't want to purchase it, only to fail the emissions test, and have to sink a bunch of money into it to get it to pass. Any advice/input is greatly appreciated!

Where is the car now? If it is in Mass. make the owner take it through testing before you purchase it. If he/she is on the up and up it shouldn't be a problem..

The car is in NY...hoping to head out this week to take a look and purchase it. Not sure if anyone else on here has test pipes, and if they've had a problem with the vehicle passing emissions....

Its most likely not going to pass emissions with test pipes. Its really not a big deal to just put the oem cats back on though either. I wouldn't really let that deter your decision its an easy fix. Ask if he still has the stock cats

I'd just factor the cost of purchase & installation of high flow cats into your purchase price and use that as a negotiation tool with the seller. Could actually work in your favor if you don't mention it until you've already worked him down as far as it seems he will go on the price - then you bring up the emissions test and needing to replace the TPs.

This is good advice.

two basic options i guess:

1)Have him pass the emissions test before you buy it. Dont know the rules for emissions testing, but you may have to get it done a couple years from now. so it would be ideal if the stock cats (if available) are included in the purchase. So you can pass the tests later without having to purchase new cats.

2)Buy car as is, have stock cats included in deal, then go with sparklecityhops advice and get him to drop the price more due to the hassle of swapping the pipes and getting the testing.

He isn't. The discussion is that he's going to have to negotiate the cost of high flow cats or stock cats and their installation into the price of buying the car.

If there is no CEL on you can pass. No inspector is going to look to see if it has cats. I have an 03 with test pipes on it for my past 2 stickers and I've passed no problem.
Just remember even if it passes it's still illegal.

What happens when they stick the meter in your exhaust?

They don't do that here in MA anymore. It is solely based on the obd II system.

Do they require that your codes not be "cleared" in a certain amount of time in MA? Or can you simply clear the code right before you show up? I know that mine pretty much threw the code within minutes of driving until I disabled the codes in Osiris.

03 and 04 aren't as bad at throwing the codes - I guess since they have the narrowband sensors. 04.5 and later seem to be more sensitive. Without non-foulers, I seriously couldn't drive 5 miles without getting the CEL code before I disabled mine in the ECU. Could be my particular car/setup or even my driving.

Anyways, sorry if we're slightly off topic. I'd use it as a negotiation tool with seller. Then if you can pass without spending the money on high flows, maybe add some non-foulers for "insurance" against failing an inspection and go about your day. If you keep throwing codes, worry about it then.

Yes the obd 2 system has rediness codes that require driving to allow the vehicle to pass. The older z's for some reason are very loose on setting cat codes.

edit: beat me to it...
