Default Best tint % to go with in NY (Westchester)

So before anybody tells me to use the search button i understand there are a lot of threads on here about tints, but i am specifically looking for advice from people in ny and more specifically westchester. I went the safe route with my last car and left it untinted, but I definitely think the Z would look a lot better with them.

So how are the cops around westchester about tints? I seem to see a good amount of people with them around here so i think ill be ok but id like some advice before i go spend the $ to get them done.

From what i have read and seen 35% seems like the magic # in NY (Although 20 is what id really like).

My plan is to leave the front the way it is, do the sides 35% and do the back either 20 or 35. Do you think it is even worth it around here to do that, or am i just asking to get pulled over?

Your right across the bridge from me and its been my experience to either do without it or go lighter than the legal limit. Its always used as an excuse to pull you over. If your interior is dark or its late in the day it can appear to be darker than it actually is. Westchester cops seem to give so called street racer looking cars a hard time. imo go light or not at all

I had 20% all around and a 8 inch 5% bar on the windshield on my last car which i had for 5 years and never got pulled over for my tints. On my Z I have 15% all around and 50% on my entire windshield and only got pulled over once and it was in NYC. I think it really depends on your local cops. I know they go crazy about windshield tints, thats why I only went 50 because I was originally going to do 35% but I figured I woulda gotten pulled over all the time. What city or town are you from? I hear different things from different cities about how cops are with tint laws.

20 is pretty dark. i suggest 35. cops all over tristate area aren't friendly to tinted cars (no matter which window) and you could end up with a ticket with a mandatory court date as in the case with this guy below, so be aware that you're going to be targeted more heavily now.

As of a few years ago any kind of tint on your car is illegal, even 50%. However, 35% is safe. Cops won't usually give you a hard time as long as they can't see inside the car. I have 35% and there have been numerous times when cops have driven behind me and right next to me at night and nothing happened. But when I had 20% tint on my last car I got pulled over a few times. Just goes to show ya...

Sorry thought this would be the right place to post. To everybody else thanks for the info. I understand what the actual legal limits are I wasn't looking for that, just wanted to see what you can get away with generally since I see alot of clearly illegal tinted cars around ny. I'm going to have to give it some thought. If I do go for it I think I'll do 35% Worst case scenario I remove them if it causes too much trouble

Yeah, that guy was me. I had %5 on my car, and got away with it for almost a year. It all depends on the cop. I got a major d*ckhead cop and had to go to court for it. I ended up taking the tint off and going to court where they just let me pay the $54 fine and leave, but it still was a pain in the ****.

I'm going back to %5 though in the summer though, I love the tint too much.

It's all up to you. My friend had %35 tint and got pulled over for it too, fact of the matter is that any tint on your front windows (here in NJ atleast) is illegal so if you're gonna tint your car, you need to be willing to face the consequences.

Sorry to hear that. I don't plan on touching my front window as I know that is definetly not allowed at all (only top 6 inches) just the sides and back. The one thing I recently thought about is that I haven't been bothered for my tinted tails for about a year. I would think if my area was strict with windows they would have got me for that by now. I think I'm going to attempt getting away with 35% but more than 1 ticket a year and they will be off.

By "Front windows" I mean the drivers and passenger side side windows, not the windshield.

Here in NJ you are only allowed to have tint on your rear windshield and rear windows (which the Z really doesn't have except those little ones next to the front side windows.)

Check here for NY:

Oh ok. In NY it's 70% on the driver/passenger, and any % on the rear window. I know I'd be taking a risk and that 35% is not legal but I see so many people around here with 20% that I was curious just how strict they really are in my area

New ro and pelham cops are rough, youll be fine in mt vernon. I live in new ro but i work in port chester so i am usually there and they dont care about anything due to the huge amount of rice. If you dont care about getting pulled over every once in a while, i would suggest 20s. If you want to be problem free get 35s.

Where in new ro are you usually? I always see a few Zs but i dont know anybody from this site in the area.

Yea 20s are nice but 35s aren't bad either and I'd rather have something I can get away with. And I'm all over new ro I have alot of friends over there. Anywhere from main street to north ave

honestly IMO yes i rish the chance of getting tickets but i get 20% on every car i buy

to me 35 is almost a waste of money as it dont look much better than clear.

Everyone i know who gets 35 and sees my cars hates their decisions.

and ive gotten 1 ticket in 10 years and 6 cars with 20%

The 35% with a dark interior looks nice to me. I'd rather go with that first and see if I have any problems. If I go for a Lon time without anybody bothering me about 35% I can always go darker later down the road.
