Talking NWZ CruiZe - Mt. St. Helens

The NWZ Group is planning a cruise through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, up and around Mt. St. Helens, on October 1, 2005. Here is the route, subject to change based on number of vehicles and available dining space for lunch:

Gifford Pinchot Route
From: Doubletree Hotel Jantzen Beach
To: Puffin Inn Dinner Stop
Driving Distance: 166.1 miles
Time: 6 hours, 52 minutes

Actual route directions will be furnished later. We are checking on any construction scheduled along the tentative route. We want to avoid construction where possible and gravel roads will not be part of the route.

I'd like to know if any PDX or SW Washington Z33 owners are interested. Please PM me.

If any Seattle folks are interested, just be aware that the CruiZe starts early, just south of Vancouver, so if you want to go it will be a very early morning for you just to get to the starting point. However, you are welcome.

I'd like to get a head count by 9/15/05 at the latest!

After our last adventure the "LAW" might not be too friendly or forgiving.

Hey John, when are you gonna take us for a "tour" of your back roads up there? I'm dying to experience that tunnel vision again when I was following you up to JRO.

Apparently the main group generated a few "complaints" by other motorists to the park rangers who then called the local peace officers. I was in a smaller group that lost contact with the main group. Myself and the others in our group where shocked to hear the allegations. I am still not sure what really transpired but we did receive a hero's escort to I-5 by the men in blue.

I think the old addage of: "You know when a party is really a party when the cops have to come to break it up."

It may have gotten out of hand at some points. Some accounts that I heard were pretty surprising. But no one got hurt or in trouble so I guess it was an alright time.

I heard th FI people were much higher speeds on the top of the mountain.

Yeah but the 2 lead cars were Porshes, not Z's.

I'll check my schedule for the Oct cruise. But I agree that Johnny Law might be more prevalent next time.

Any G's welcome?

I'd love to make the drive with you guys but I've got 3 tickets on my record. 1 more and my license gets suspended. Not to mention that I'm contributing to some insurance agent's kid's college fund. Sounds like I'd get carried away in the moment and risk it.

Must resist.

Y'all have fun though. Sounds like a blast.

Why not roll with the second pack of people who won't speed "as much..."

I'm interested, but it's too early to say if my schedule will work for sure. What time are you meeting up in the morning?

Hey Al. Maybe you have those tickets because you haven't hung out with us in a while.

I suspect this trip will (literally) be more cruising than speeding. A few RV's will need to get passed but I don't think we're going to be tearing things up.

I just don't want to be a bump on a log and get in the way of anyone else who wants to play. If I'm not working my retail job (gotta work Sat and Sun) by then, I'll join you guys.

This is gonna be a mixed group of 240's, 260's, 280's, Z32's and Z33's. So we will probably not get too crazy although our leader for this trip drives a TT Z32. <G> I expect we may spread out some and have a slow pack and a fast pack but we do need to be safe, sane and generally law abiding. No one needs a ticket or a bent car.

In any event, it should be fun!

Of course the G folks are welcome. I will need a head count to make sure we don't exceed or overwhelm our lunch spot. There's only so much room. So let me know if you are coming and how many in your party by 9/15.

Departure time is 10AM from the Jantzen Beach DoubleTree Hotel in Portland. Take the first exit off of I-5, just across the Columbia River from Vancouver, WA.

Here's a link to a Dex Online Map:

http://www.dexonline.com/servlet/Act...ASIC&REGION=in

Again, final route will be determined so we don't get caught up in some road construction and that route will be published here.

Also, see the "Summer Drive" thread here on another trip, The CruiZe to the Coast, planned for 9/3.

Yeah. I just don't want to have to ride a bike to work.

Default Update!

Sorry this took so long. The organizer travels a lot on business.

We are on for this cruise on 10/1! Here's the details:

Time:

October 1, 2005, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM

Location:

Starts at the Doubletree Hotel, Jantzen Beach, in Portland on the South East side of the I - 5 Bridge between Vancouver and Portland. We will be between the Bridge & Hotel on the Oregon side of the River.

This cruise will Start in the parking lot of the Doubletree hotel East between the Hotel and the Interstate Bridge.

We will travel along Highway 14 on the North shore of the Columbia River into the gorge with a quick stop at an old apple plantation just across the River from Multnomah Falls.
Continuing East on H 14 we will turn North at Carson, WA and travel up the Windy River gorge to a rest stop with a great view of the South East slope of Mt. St Helens.

The next planned stop is Lower Falls for a break to enjoy the falls, if we are on time we will also make a stop at the APE caves Geologic Site.

A lunch stop is planned for Cougar, Wa of about 1 hour, where we can fuel up if needed.
After the late lunch stop we will head for the Quay for Dinner and Dancing for those that want to make a night of it with a live band.

Uhhh.. yeah... about that....

Make sure that you get an e-mail or see it as a notification on the website before driving up on Sat.

I haven't heard of anything regarding that date yet and if I don't by Weds, chances are it probably won't happen.

Again; keep tabs on the website or e-mails.

Oh...well I just figured since 2 of the last 3 "tentative" practices were held so...hmm...

If it does end up being cancelled...then I'll consider this drive I guess. Not looking to get caught up in too much craziness though...
