Default Need help for a place to stay Portland Aug 20-27

So my gf goes out to Portland every summer to dance with a ballet group out there. This year I am going to go out and visit while she has a break. I'm planning on being out there Aug 20-27, which is a Thursday to a Thursday. She stays with a host family while shes out there and doesnt want to impose on them more than she already has and have me stay there as well.

Unfortunately I've been finding that the hotel price is making the trip very cost ineffective. So I'm looking for alternative forms of lodging. Renting rooms in private houses, housesitting, etc.

I'm pretty much up for anything besides hostels.

The gf is dancing at two studios, one on SW 11th, the other on NW Northrop, so we are trying to find something in the downtown area so we can utilize public transportation. But she does have her car.

my Gf and I are both 27, shes a ballet dancer (obviously) and I'm a chemical engineer. Just a little background to let people know that I'm not some 18-19 punk kid.

If anyone can help me out in any way I would greatly appreciate it.

Dave

So this girl comes to Portland every Summer to dance with a ballet group out here. This year, her boyfriend wants to come visit her while she's on a break. He's planning on coming Aug 20th - 27th, which is a Thursday to Thursday. The girl stays with me but I told her I don't want some creepy dood in my house.

Unfortunately for him, hotels are too expensive. Even the $25/night flea bag hotel is too "rich for his blood".

He's pretty much up for anything but a hostel.

Maybe one of you poor suckers will let this dood crash with you.

Just because someone doesn't want to spend the money on something doesn't mean that they can't or that it makes sense to if other options are available.

If *I* was going to be on the other side of the country for a week, I'd likely try and stay with someone as well.

Word. Hotels are not worth the money. It's something we all put up with on vacations that end up costing too much anyways. I'd say it's a smart move and hopefully somebody is set up to allow him to stay for cheaper. Money is better spent elsewhere..

While I have no problem crashing with friends when I go out of town. Maybe it's a cultural thing or an age thing, but sounds like some people have a different definition of what constitutes imposing. I'd never ask complete strangers for a handout, especially in a situation where you have other options such as not going at all, or getting a cheap hotel/motel room. Hell, I stayed in a hostel before in Lake Tahoe, back in the high school days, and it's really not a big deal. Even these days, a week would be like $150.

while I agree it is something I would never personally do, I'd sooner not go or fork up for a Hotel, I don't think it's a terrible idea.

I am more trusting I guess in some regards, but you better bet I'd take precautions and still charge the guy about half the rate of a hotel : P

maybe it's easier for me to say that since I don't own a home, though.

My post is called a "perspective spoof". It was meant to be a joke. Anyway, I think that with this community specifically, finding someone to stay with wouldn't be such a bad idea. You might even find someone that can show you around town while you're here.

Dont worry, I took no offense.

Honestly, I probably can afford to drop the money on a hotel. I just have a hard time justifying the price. Sure I can probably stay near the airport for much cheaper and take the train in, but I was trying to look for more cost effective, less conventional means of lodging.

But I understand the apprehension of having a stranger in the home, even one as strange as me.

I knew when I posted that it would be a long shot. But who knows, maybe someone had a guest house or a furnished spare room for rent.

So yeah, even if anyone can suggest some places, really all I get with the travel sites are the expensive downtown hotels and the airport motels. So if anyone knows of some moderately priced bed & breakfasts, or things of that nature I'd be up for that too. I may have to cut my stay down a few days to make it cost effective, but I think the quality of the trip would increase. i figure locals would be a better resource than some of those internet sites.

yeah, Its kind of a ways into the future, I figured if I started looking early it would increase the chances of finding something. If you find out that you are staying through that time period and can help me out shoot me a PM and we'll see if we can work something out.

I have a large private room available in my 3 bedroom 2 bath single level NE Portland home. The room has it's own entrance and has been resently remodeled with new paint and really nice custom lighting. Located on a private 1/3rd acre lot I'm right off of Hwy 205 -15 minutes drive from downtown Portland and only 10 minutes from the airport (PDX). I'm actively advertizing to rent it out - but likely it will still be available in July. If you are interested you can call me for more info (503) 998-1527

That looks like a really nice room as well.

Question for both of you, are either of these rooms furnished at all? Just wondering if I'll have to pack a sleeping bag. Also could you PM me either addresses or cross streets so I can show the gf and try to get a relative approximation to where she wants to be.

Thanks
Dave
