KENT, Wash. (AP) - King County fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a Kent house fire that killed a 32-year-old man who was house-sitting for his parents.
A deputy with the King County Sheriff's Office noticed a smell of smoke while patrolling the 10900 block of SE 212th Street early Saturday. He discovered the house was on fire when he searched for the source of the smell.
As the deputy called in firefighters, neighbors told him that a man may still be in the house. The deputy tried to enter the home but was driven back by heat and smoke, said Kent Deputy Fire Marshal Don Barberie.
Kent firefighters arrived to find thick smoke and heavy flames coming from the roof. They found the man in a back bedroom unconscious and unresponsive. The man was pulled from the house, but died at the scene, Barberie said.
The house sustained heavy damage from the flames. King County fire investigators are focusing on the kitchen area but have not at this time determined the cause of the fire.
Investigators say the home had a smoke detector but they aren't sure it was working.
