I think the purpose is after replacing/repairing the window motor, the reset process teaches it the full range of motion, i.e. full up and full down. This way it also knows just how much to kick the window down on the back edge when you open and close the door.

So lets say you put the motor in and ythe drive linkages aren't aligned properly, this lets the system know just how far is up and how far is down so the motor isn't spinning away after open/close.

Or something to that effect....I'm just guessing here.

Pretty much, although the window regulator is wound tightly enough that the motor spinning away is a non issue. Inversely, it also aborts auto-up/down commands if it detects too much resistance to movement.
