Default Selling my car to out-of-state guy, have a question

This is reposted from the Socal forums, sorry for that, but I figure you Norcal people don't post there too often.

I need some advice, I have looked all over the place for the answer and I don't really want to be put on hold at the DMV for 2 hours...

Does anyone know, is it legal to sell your car to someone with an out-of-state driver's license? I am selling my Maxima to a New Jersey guy who just moved here to socal (and buying a Z of course)...

Please don't answer if you're not certain... I don't want to get screwed for this.

sell it and get the money. be sure, however, to fully complete a release of liability sending it to sacto via certified mail. this will protect you if the buyer chooses not to register the vehicle in new jersey or commits some sort of wierd felony. release of liability is very important by protecting you, the seller. rich, san jose, ca

Thanks for the advice,

actually the guy is not taking the car back to NJ, he is living in Socal now. But then again, after I sign release of liability form, what the hell do I care what he does with it...

yup, release of liability form is crucial, very important. And if you send it certified mail this adds an extra layer of security. Be sure to get the money, however. rich, san jose, ca
