Are there places that I can get used racing tires for the OE 17" rims...I just picked up an extra set of OE rims and am hoping to find some used tires for cheap; I plan on using them for track only (I might need to drive from home to the track with the tires). (Back in the day, my dad's friends would go to races and buy the used tires off professional drivers at the end of the day...the tires would still have a good amount of tread left)

One thing to consider when buying used race tires is that even though they may still have tread, they most likely will not have many heat cycles left. If you're new to race tires, this can be a dangerous thing. Plus, if you get 3 days out of a used set of tires, also consider the cost of mounting and balancing and your cost per day will still be quite high.
I would consider something like a toyo RA1. They are one of the more forgiving race tires, you can drive it to and from the track and they last forever. For $600 you can get about 1-2 years out of them rather than 1-2 weekends. I can get about 18 days out of a set of full tread RA1's. Cost per day is not so bad.

 

thanks for the advice Dave...I was hoping that some of the more serious solo2 / competetion ppl would be unloading their partially used tires - but like you said, the mounting/balance costs may outweigh the $ saved.

What tire sizes do you recommend?
I was thinking of:
F: 235/40/17
R: 255/40/17

Also, the prices I'm finding are in the range of $230/tire...

looks like smaller sizes cost more for some reason. I know I pay 700 locally at AIM for my 275's. I assumed that smaller sizes would cost less. They're still showing a cost lof ess than 230 per tire that you mention.

Yippee!!! I just picked up a set of used Toyo RA-1's!!!!!! A guy had used them on his M3 for 4 HPDE events and then they had just been sitting in his garage.

They're 235/40/17's (From what I hear, this tire set-up is more popular with autoX-ers...but either way, they should last me for the next 2 yrs)

*I had to share this w/ ppl here b/c my wife just thinks I'm mental eveytime I get excited about a new car part.

 

Wow I bet those have some very short sidewalls. You will be getting a free 3.9 final drive with the low aspect ratio.
RA-1's are definatly more of a road race tire than an autox tire. They don't warm up fast enough for cone dodging. Enjoy
