dude, fox geologist said, be on the look out and be ready for a stronger one within the next 72 hours, anything up to a 6.4 ='(

that's what i don't understand, aren't aftershocks supposed to be smaller? =(

Yeah, that was pretty strong considering it was only rated as a 5.6. It definitely felt stronger. I was actually at work when it happened and I was scrambling afterwards to make sure all our key systems where still functioning properly .

The reason they say watch for a stronger one is that the one that just hit is either the main, or a precursor. If the main, aftershocks will be smaller over time. If it's a precursor, then the next one should be a magnitude bigger. It is not common for a larger earthquake to be a precursor, though...

can't believe my "natural disasters" course would ever come in handy

I will take the USGS over ****ing fox news:

STRONG AFTERSHOCKS (Magnitude 5 and larger)

At this time (immediately after the mainshock) the probability of a strong and possibly damaging aftershock IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS is approximately 30 PERCENT.
EARTHQUAKES LARGER THAN THE MAINSHOCK

Most likely, the recent mainshock will be the largest in the sequence. However, there is a small chance (APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 10 PERCENT) of an earthquake equal to or larger than this mainshock in the next 7 days.
