The truth behind the GT-R -dyno numbers!
I kept wondering how the GT-R would produce such impressive acceleration numbers despite a 3800+ curb weight...

this isn't really news, the Japanese have been understating HP figures on their supercars for many years in Japan already. It all stems from their previous truce when all the car companies in Japan agreed on the 280hp limit. The R34 GTR for example was rated at 280hp obviously not to break the rule, but it produced around 320 at least. The 280hp rule is gone now by the way
To even quote the article, they say....
"It's far more likely the Japanese are simply continuing an underreporting tradition born during the era of that ridiculous voluntary 280-horsepower cap"

I've heard of manufacturers under reporting numbers during mid-model refreshes but I don't know that I understand the resoning of doing it on a brand new "halo" model supercar.
If it makes 500+ hp I would think they would want to tell anyone who'll listen. Especially with Toyota and Acura one the way with their own 500 hp supercars on the way.

the ole 280 is gone, but i think the idea still exists...
well i guess seeing it from the car auido side of things, itsnot at all weird, all the best amplifier manufactueres, for example, consistently underrated their amps.
you can say this habit came out of the eraly days of car audio competitions where competitors are grouped by watts in their system and the watts is just waht the manufactuer rated. meaning, if your two amps each have 1000 watts, but your manufacturer only rates them at 50 watts each, you can go in the 100 watt class but in reality have 2000 watts and an advantage.
but since then, there is no such advantage anymore, your new power classes are based on relatively accurate measurements, yet good quality manufacturers still underrate their gear. a routine test of a high quality 500 watt rated amps will yield real output of say 600-650 or even higher...
to me, it has to do with prestige, a hgih quality product should be modest, and give more than expected, the so called speak softly but carry a big stick
also in the same realm IMO is why companies like bmw or porsche will consistently release 0-62mph acceleration times for their upcoming models that everyone knows is much slower than what the car will actually do
