Planning roadtrip - North California Coast
We were planning a trip along highway 1 from SF to Crescent City for this holiday weekend. I am considering driving the Z for the trip. Would anyone know of the road conditions on this stretch of road? I'm hoping the roads are well kept and easily driveable for a Z?
Also, we hope to visit the Redwood Parks near Crescent City. There are a couple of scenic spots that I would like to visit but concerned the Z cannot drive it. In particular, has anyone visited Stout Grove near Hiouchi? I'm reading that there is about 1.5 miles of non-pavement to get to that area. Anyone know the conditions of this area?
Thanks!

Hey John, I've driven to Point Reyes and Mendocino and both areas have pretty good roads. You won't be disappointed with these places.
Good thing with Point Reyes, park your car near the visitor's info area and ride the shuttle. It will take you to most parts of the park.

hey soldfish on my random trip to Seattle i decided to hit up crescent city since i was intrigued by how it was hit by a tsunami way back in the day. i've driven up 1 to crescent city but i didn't drive 1 all the way i actually cut across from 5 to redding from redding to creascent city so Hwy 5 to 299 to 1. DON'T do this! even though 299 is great and twisty man it was a hard 100+ miles. i did this drive in February in the Z so I had a combination of Rain, Snow, Ice (fun right) other than that once i hit hwy 1 the roads were pretty smooth. I stayed over night in crescent city then i was on my way to seattle. during that time it was snowing on the main road so i was forced to go up hwy 1 which wasn't a problem for me it was a great road to drive on and to see the coast line was awesome. oh also before coming back make sure you grab some 92 octane
some pictorials,
Destination.

About 3 years ago, I almost made to Crescent City. Made it as far as McKinleyville but had to head east on 299 towards Redding to make it back home to San Jacinto.
The drive was awesome. If ever I was in the area again, I'd definitely like to finish off where I left off (take 1 as far up all the way to Canada. Cross over. Get my passport stamped and head back. )
There was a particular twisty area that I liked a little past Fort Bragg, 1/208 towards 101/271. I just wished it went a little longer.

Hwy 1 and 101 will be fine this time of year. You can always check with the CHP about any closures.
Hwy 1 will actually end at Leggett then it turns into Hwy 101. If you want to take a nice parallel route for part of the way take Rte 254. There's a section they call the Ave. of the Giants. It was a really nice road for the portion I drove a few years ago.
I think this is a pic from that drive.

I've driven and ridden all parts of HWY 1 from GG bridge all the way North, where it dumps back onto 101. The only stretch of road on HWY 1 IMO that sucks is South of Stinson Beach, the rest is great especially the further North you go.
The last 15 miles or so of HWY 1 before it dumps back onto 101 at Leggett is pure heaven.
