Default Anybody here swap out their shifter?

I was about to order the Nismo GT Titanium **** but decided to test how difficult it is to remove the stock shifter. I've been told its tough to remove....but man let me tell you, looks like its going to be a real pain in the ***.

So has anyone done this themselves and is willing to help a brotha out? Or, if you're also interested in swapping out the stock shifter maybe we can meet up? Not sure if I want to try this on my own....

I actually had mine done at a dealership.
Do not go to Capitol Nissan to get it done!! It took them 1 week to swap out my shifter. Which most of that time was waiting for the broken dash replacement parts caused by them trying to take the **** off.

Anyways, I heard 2004 shift ***** twist off easier then the early 2003 ones.

Good luck!! love the Ti ****!!

It's pretty easy actually. I used a pair of vice grips and some cut up pieces of bicycle inner tube to protecet the shifter shaft, holding it in place so that it doesn't twist. Then used a pair of fairly large slip joint pliers plus inner tube to twist the stock **** off. Instructions were pretty clear which made it very straightforward.

So you have to clamp onto the rubber covering of the shifter rod, right (underneath the foam padding)? Where on the shifter did you clamp down? Was it the metallic section or a little above on the leather? Thx bro

Thats what I was wondering....seems like clamping on the rubber covering of the shift rod would twist as its just covering the metal rod??

THIS... is how your take off the stock ****.. LOL... what i did was use a vice grip to clamp the shift rod. i put a towel around it first, so the rubber won't get messed up. then got another towel and got an adjustable wrench to try and twist it off while my friend holds down the vice grip steady. after about 15 mins of getting nowhere. (just kept making cracking noises). it was actually the hard plastic shell of the ****. Then we gave up and took out a PHAT pipe wrench. that thing took out my shifter as pic'd above. but it did the trick. the middle part is actually rubber and was hard to grip with the wrench cuz it would turn but not the **** itself. I don't think there's a way to get it off cleanly. If your gonna take it off, your never gonna have the stock **** again.

wow, that really destroyed your shift ****!!

I just twisted mine by hand. It was tough, but I just put a little muscle behind it, and it came off no problem.

Yeah I clamped the vice grips around the rubber covering, and used a piece of inner tube for protection. This allowed me to really cinch it down tight to prevent any turning. For the knbo itself I grabbed onto the leather part above the metal neck. But I used more inner tubing to prevent any damage. You do have to twist hard but it will come off easily once you break torque.

Damn s9am_me. I replied before really checking out your post. Your shift **** must've been torqued down with some serious force. Too bad about the old **** but hey the new one looks great!

Thanks a lot apharm. That's precisely the information that I was looking for.

Hey, you just made it in the sig pic... one car out of the 22 is missing from the pic... and that one car isn't in the original pic either

Wonder who that was?
