Im on there too... Its a great place to do your research on camera's, accessories and everything in between...
The reviews on Canon L series are a must read... I own 2
24-105mm F4 USM IS and 70-200mm F4 USM IS...Oh yeah... To the OP...
Get an XTi (400D) and call it a day (if you can afford it why not?)... The kit lens isnt that bad... If you want to buy just the body let me know and Ill sell you the kit lens for cheap (my350z discount
)... Good luck with your shopping...

Here is one I took of my dog when I was bored one day...
Enjoy...

400D, 18-55mm kit lens, 21mm, 1/60 sec, iso 400...
I tried to take another pic with the L but my dog got a little too excited and just kept on licking the lens

Yes it's loud... First time I've hear it I thought it's broken. But what it has to do with quality of pictures?"

Also if you into portraits - get 50mm f1.8 (mk I, if you can find it on ebay). For under 100 bucks it's probably wolrds first exception to the rule you-get-what-you-paid-for

Definately buy the Nifty Fifty 50 f/1.8 because it takes amazing pix for under $80...lol It also will depend on what kind of shots you take the most since each specific type has their specialty. I will recommend if you go Canon to register at http://photography-on-the.net/forum/. I have learned so many things on this site.
I just picked up the nikon D200 with 18 - 135 lens. Very nice camera and its as easy to use as my little Sony point n shoot. Its hard to get used to going back to the viewfinder. But with all the information packed into the view its worth it.
I believe that any camera will only be as good as the optics. If you have a cheap lens your going to get defects and washout. I had a sony 505 2 meg pix and it had a massive lens ( yea its a size thing LOL ) and the pics were fantastic. Unfortunatly you could only enlarge the pictures so far.
I still use my little Sony. But prefer my D200 for shots with detail and depth.

^Pictures like that arent difficult once you've shot atleast 500-1000 practice shots. it becomes easy to recognize what apeture and exposure time you'll need, and practice shooting is FREE!. I myself want to get a nice macro lens that i can use as a walk around lens. Im a macro guy apparently. I like taking close up shots. Land scape shots don't do it for me. Not moving enough. Ill post some pictures I took with my rebel XT that I got JUST 3 days ago when I get home.

Great.. I want a nice wide angle lens. I have my nikon on the highest quality and finest settings and it still reports that I can take 450 pictures per my 4 gig chip.
I have not had the time yet to go out and start snapping. Its sucked here weather wise.
Cant wait to see the pics

I took this with a used $125 canon a530 point and shoot I got from ebay. This was to prove a point on a camera forum that the camera doesnt matter much. I took shoots that favored dSLR, and tired to see what I could do
Not that this are fantastic, but it would be hard to tell them apart from a expensive dSLR, at this resolution. I am fairly please with them, and although changing settings is harder then with a dSLR, a PnS can still be just as effective. This are a few I still have on my server

I dont like dslr for the extra resolution. Im not printing anything so 8mp or even 5 mp is perfect for me. I like being able to switch out to better lenses (or atleast have the option to). I also like having FULL control of the shots, because the autofocus on some of the pnp dont have enough resolution or they focus on the wrong objects. Here are some pictures of my Z i took with my dslr. My next post will have pnp shots. I added a border and cropped one of the pictures using PS.
