7+ megapixels really neccesary? I have 3 MP camera and it works fine, but want to get a compact one.. thinking of the canon sd1000, but people are saying it take blurry pictures... and yes, I've been arond dpreview.com.

I'd go with Canon SD700 IS

IS is for image stabilization.

This would depend on how much you want to spend. Do you need a long focal lenth,3X or 12X optical zoom ? Do you need a camera that you can set functions on in different lighting conditions ? Do you need it to be compact ?
Also, the file size. The bigger the better in this case. You can always down size an image, but it is very hard to get one larger and keep the detail & resolution in the image.

Now a days you can find a pretty good out there for $ 200 to $ 300. I like the Canon G7 myself !

Panasonic TZ1

5MP (more than enough) with 10X optical zoom (and a Leica lens) along with image stabilization. Fairly compact camera as well. Has terrific reviews.

All of this added up to me purchasing one several months ago.

the samsung s730 digital with a 2.5"screen is on sale this week for 123.

you need to keep a steady hand to take good pictures with a cannon if it dosen't come with image stabilization.

I am a fan anything Panasonic like the TZ1 mentioned, but recently I found the Canon A series amoung the best point and shots around.

If your on a tight budget, buy open boxed never used Canon A530 for under $160. I use my A530 far more then any of my dSLR.

+1 Great for low-light situations where you don't want to use the flash.

I have a Olympus 710, 7.1MP, ultra compact. I love the thing, I've taken loads of great pictures, even from really far away at fast speeds (horse track pics came out very clean).

HP R967

It has 10MP resolution (not that you really need that much but it's nice to have). Lots of manual controls, auto controls, image stabilization, adaptive lighting and in camera editing. I also hear that it has Fuji lenses. It's a little bit larger than the average point & shoot but still pretty compact.
