i use my D40x more than my D300. its smaller and lighter.
buying the most expensive colored pencils in the world isnt going to make you a better drawer.
you're better off asking these type of questions on a photo forum.
on car forums people think you as a lesser person if you dont run volks and that HDR is the best thing since taking pictures in parking garages.

you cant tell but i have only 6 D300 pictures on my page. the rest are D40X.
if you like cars there's a formula D blog and a random car pic blog all D40X pics.

good luck with your choice of body. later on you should be looking at picking lenses. that's a whole other can of worms.

I actually like the entry level bodies as it's smaller and more portable. I'm thinking of getting an XSi or Olympus 520 once it's released just so I'd be more inclined to lug it with me... even though I have the 40D.
Everyone gets caught up in the full sized bodies and how it feels better, but an often overlooked aspect is the portability.
Again, if you're not doing fast action photography in low light, why even pay the extra $$$? Would anyone start to learn to drive on a Ferrari? Would you feed your infant a steak?
I have a 40D, and have yet to use it's 6 FPS or it's 9 point focus points other than center.
If he's gonna be shooting mostly stationary objects, or even action in good light, does he really need a 300D? I'd just get a f/2.8 zoom or a fast prime to compensate if fast shutter speed in low light is needed.

Ok. So I just got back from visiting my girlfriend's family near Philly. There was this big barbecue at her house and one of her uncles had a D40. We talked for a little bit about it and he let me test it out and later that night (last night), I bought one on eBay for $420 shipped to me ... I'm excited.
My suggestion is to start with a more entry level DSLR if you are not familiar with these cameras. The D300 is an excellent camera (I have one.), but the D-60 is a good choice as is the D-40(X). Both will give you great flexiblity, some point and shoot for a lot less money than the D300, D3.
I'm a Nikon shooter, so I'll pass the floor to the Canon folks.
AHH, Xsi - good choice
