Default Digital Camera Opinions...Please

I'm in the market for a digital camera. I have been looking at two models from Cannon....

I understand about megapixels and so fourth......however I'd be interested in hearing from others that are more experienced than I.

Interesting....one camera is a 4.0mp and the other is a 5.0mp and they are quite similar in price....I guess because the 4.0 is 'compact'...

Opinions please yahh and nahh??

Thanks in advance................................Ant

I looked at both of those, but I ended up getting a much cheaper Nikon Coolpix 3100 since it's all I need. If I were to spend more I would have gotton the 4.0 MP CoolPix.

I didn't consider that 4.0 there just because the case is so ugly to me. I figured that would bother me forever. But it did get excellent reviews.

The reviews that that Cannon 5.0 weren't so hot. There are better and cheaper 5.0 cameras, and even though it looks really cool, the demo at Fry's was scratched to hell. So I was afraid that'd happen to mine. The others are a tad bigger, but not much, and I think it's worth it for the better price and quality.

http://www.lpreview.com has some very in-depth reviews. It's not too critical, though, because ALL digital cameras rate pretty closely. I'd just make sure you get one with a quality lens (Nikon, Canon) and manual controls.

When it comes to buying, do a search on Yahoo Shopping. They usually undercut places like Circuit City by about 25-30%.

I bought the Nikon Coolpix 4300 which is 4 MP. I considered all the 4MP cameras out there but thought about how much power they use up. The office has two digital cameras and none of them use recharable batteries. I've seen cameras eat (literally) batteries and thought about the costs of buying and constanly replacing them. For the price of the 4300 which has rechargable batteries, 4MP, zoom functions just like all the others, I figured it would be cheaper in the long run. And, and...not all lenses are made alike. Keep that in mind as people over look that aspect of a camera. I've found the Nikon has a pretty good quality lens that gives you pretty clear pictures. (I compared digital photos from a neighbor of mine that has a camera made Kodak..go figure. Oh both cameras has the same MP's and the same settings when I compared the results.)

Try www.cnet.com for reviews too. Good luck.

Just picked up the Canon Digital Rebel, amazing camera. It's an SLR, so you can switch lenses. 6.3 megapixel, I highly recommend it. Otherwise, for less money, go for the 4 megapixel one. The images will still be larger than you'll need unless you want poster size prints.

Check out this site for a whole bunch of reviews, perfessional and consumer. www.dpreview.com . This site reviews every digital camera on the market right now, plus you can learn just about anything you wanna know about digital cameras. This site came in very handy when I was shopping for my digital camera. You can compare one camera straight up with another, plus they show a couple sample pictures for some of the cameras. By the way I ended up getting the 4.0 MP Canon Elph S400 which is the one you are considering. The camera fits my needs perfect. My brothers had the Elph S200 and they had virtually no problems and very good picture quality. I went a step further and picked up the S400. The camera is very small and compact. The build quality is superior to other digital cameras on the market. The actual casing is a metalic ceramic polymer which makes the camera feel strong unlike some other cameras on the market made out of plastic. I also liked how this polymer is finger print proof. When you hold the camera there are virtually no fingerprints on the casing. What I also liked about it was that the picture quality matches or betters some 5 MP cameras. My Father had the Sony P10 5 MP camera and my pictures came out better in many cases. The camera has a lot of neat features such as picture stitching, and movie modes. I've had the camera since august and i've used it a lot at college. I have had no problems yet and I highly recommend this camera.

The coolpix 3100 is more than I need, but you can even find the 4300 on yahoo now for $300. That's going to be 350-400 at a store plus I assume FL has sales tax? (No income tax I know, you bastards!)

Speaking from personal experience I highly recommend the Nikon CoolPix 4300, especially now that it's come down in price. Canons are very good too...you probably can't go wrong with either. 4 MP is plenty for anything up to 8 x 10 prints...check out the ones you are thinking about in person and see which feels the most comfortable and navigate through the menus if possible. One will probably stand out. I echo ZilvahZ's comments about the rechargeable batteries...very nice to have.

Oh yeah, rechargable is the way to go, and you can get a setup for like $12 that's 1850 mA, or $40 at best buy

I don't think I'm supposed to use AA batteries, but I did once and they only lasted about 20 seconds.

Oh yeah, I've heard really good things about Dimage, and Minolta is one of those companies that makes a great lens. If I remember correctly, that was the top rated 4 MP in consumer reports.
