Digital Camera - help deciding on purchase, please
Okay... I'm looking at purchasing a new digital camera. I've put it off for months and have decided to get on before HIN-Atlanta this weekend.
My budget is $400 which must include a higher capacity memory card.
Any thoughts? My current leading candidate is the 4.0megapixel Nikon 4300 which can be had for just over $300
In the same price range, I could also get...
- Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P93 (5.1Megapixel) - better resolution, but does this have more limited features than the Nikon???
- Canon PowerShot A80
or I could step down to 3.2 Megapixels and get either
- Canon PowerShot A75
or
- Nikon CoolPix 3200
I'm more interested in features than stupid levels of resolution. Is 3.2 going to be sufficient for my needs? I rarely would need to print something larger than standard page size.
To give you a basis of comparison, I am currently used to using a Nikon 995, which is a nice 3.2Megapixel camera with a swivel chassis. I'd want to at least exceed the capabilities of this camera.

Come on Andy. If you are going to keep up with me (like you do for every mod I have ever done
) You need to get this one:

sorry, guys... can't afford that beast. Besides, for the type of photography I do, I don't need 8megapixels, 4 is plenty
Also, this will double as my travel camera so it must be compact.
Now, if you two would like to kick in so I can afford a better camera, I can give you an address to PayPal some money to me...
And for the record Bonz... I don't think I'm "keeping up with you" on mods... I think it's more like we're trading punches... you put something on your car, the I do something similar plus something else... then you do that thing plus one more... and so on... it's an evil chain!

Andy, I work pt at Circuit City selling digital cameras. My fav right now is the Canon Powershot S11S. It is 3.2MP w/10x optical zoom! Now it does cost $399 BUT, and this is big, it takes Compact Flash memory which is the cheapest out there. I think the Nikon takes XD memory (that or SD). If XD then for the price of a 128 card you can get a 256 Compact Flash. Thats from CC. The zoom on that camera is very fast as well as the auto focus. I know it is a little more than you wanted to spend, but it will be well worth it. It is what I would do. PM me if you have any ???
go to www.stevesdigicams.com
I would recommend the DSC-P110 from sony ....
check techbargains.com ... they regularly have $50 - 90 off coupons at dell.com for awesome deals on digicams
hope that helps

I'm no photographer so i just looked at some point and shoot with basic options. I checked out the sony dsc-t1, the canon elph s410, the olympus 4 mp cam (can't remember the model) and the casio exilim exz4. from the review i read the canon has the best picture quality. i thought the sony would since it's the only 5mp camera in the group, but i read something about the CCD not being able to handle the picture in such a small camera.
so i ended up getting the canon s410 and i'm happy with it. 4mp is definitely large enough for what i'll ever need. it was $379 i believe for the camera and i got a 256mb cf card for $60 with a mail in rebate.

Thanks for the input guys... after much research (including the comments of everyone above), I've pretty much decided I will be going with a Canon A80.
Everything I've read is that Canon typically has the best picture quality compared to other brands at the same megapixel rating.
Also, this one has plenty of nice features, yet leaves me enough change for 256mb memory card and an inexpensive tripod... not to mention it has one thing most of the other cameras I've looked at do not... a swivel LCD screen! I'm addicted to this on the Nikon 995 I sometimes use and cannot imagine having a new digital without it.
So, if I can find one tomorrow night, I will be toting my new toy with me to HIN-Atlanta. With any luck, you will be seeing the results of my photography shortly after I return from there.

First of all, you should probably check out dpreview.com. They have lots of in depth reviews and sample photos for digital cameras. (best site of it's type).
As for my opinions:
The Nikons and Canons are great. So are the Olympus cameras.
I would avoid the Sony cameras in general.

Wow. A lot of people like the Canons. I have a G2 and A60.
Avoid the megapixel craze at all costs! They are increasing the pixel density of the same size CCD. This almost always results in more noise! Most people printing 8x10 or less will never notice the difference in anything over 3-4 megapixels.
Many people upgrade cameras like they do computers, but my G2 still takes great pictures. What else does a camera need to do? I do like the increased zoom of the new top end powershots, though.

Good thing I have those 8 MP's huh?

The Power Shot Pro comes with a 64 MB flash card but I HAD to go out and get me a 512 MB!!!

Good luck Andy. Maybe you can take some pics of YOUR LAMBO DOORS!!!
