Default Engine bay effect

Hi, I was wondering what the effect is called when some of you take pics of the engine bay, but then the hood is almost invisible, Thanks!

...effect?

All you do is take two pictures from a fixed position--one with the hood up, one with the hood down. Cut out the engine from the engine pic, place it on the closed-hood pic, make the edges nice and fluffy and turn down the opacity. VIOLA! done

Or, do the opposite. Take both pics from the fixed position, and then open them both as two layers. Have the open hood shot as the bottom layer, and lightly erase the top layer until you have the desired effect.

well it doesn't really matter what layer is on top or bottom, as long as you cut away whatever you don't need. Not really sure what you are trying to say there.

ya its pretty easy using the layers. the hard part is to get good photos to begin with, no extra reflections, bright contrasts etc.

here was one of my 1st attempts.
