Default Real Hr?

So I was at a car meet and someone came up to me and asked if my car was a real 350z Hr, I said yeah it is because it’s an HR. Is there a difference with something out there? I was confused. Also I have an 08 350z hr but it doesn’t have the buttons on the steering, so is it a base model?

Probably because lots of people put the hr hood on the 03-06z even though it looks like poo in comparison.

I find this amusing that the HR motored Z has somehow crazily been elevated to such a lofty status.

Gee golly, then my '11 VHR Nismo compared to my "plain ol' '03 DE" must be the Z equivalent to a 2019 Corvette ZR1 and a Chevette!! How about that!! Dayam!

Let's get real folks.

To answer your question. Yes, you most likely have a base model. Check your driver side door jam to verify, the base model will just say "350Z" (I think) on the VIN sticker. You can also use online vin checker/decoder tools.

Some other signs you have a base model.
1) No VDC button above fuel filler/flap release.
2) No Bose stereo.
3) No OEM leather/power/heated seats.
4) No Brembo Brakes.
5) No homelink system in center rear view mirror.
6) No rear spoiler/hatch lip.
7) No aluminum pedal set.

Sometimes this can get confusing since some of these items can be added onto the vehicle by previous owners, making the VIN the best way to verify.

I've seen used car lots advertise base model 350Zs as an Enthusiast package/edition before.

Lastly, I think that's hilarious that the HR variant of the VQ has taken on such an iconic status with certain people. It's a great engine, but I still love my RevUp DE.

I agree, it is quite exaggerated among Z owners. I remember posts on here about people wanting to find "HR" decals or emblems to make sure others know its an HR.

First time I found out people were making a big deal about it was seeing a Z with a plate that read something like "HR 350Z" and my first thought was, "Uhhhh, yeah, so, what.... Is that supposed to be a thing or something?"

Imagine how superior I felt in my VHR 34.... < BAAAAAARRRRRRFFFFFFFFF >

Makes me weep for non-image-oriented owners of Z cars...

That I'd get. (AKA "GET EEEEET!!" ) There's a pretty large difference between a "standard" Vette and a Z06. Or even a standard Z to a Nismo Z I'd get. But an HR Z when every '07-08 had that motor from base to Nismo? Psh.

Or, am I just hypocritically justifying my plate?

Your plate just makes people think "Is this really an 08, damn that's old"

People think my 350z is only like 8 years old, so I rather not actually tell them it's an 03

To which I would say, "Yup, sure looks and runs great and all better than your POS, hunh?"

That is, if I still had it and actually cared what anyone thought of it.

Don't forget, after I sold both of my Nismos, the "youngest" car I own is 15 years old and my others are 47 and 50 years old.

Just how I like it. Don't need no new fangled "keep me in my lane" sensors or any of the new tech stuff. Heck, I don't even use cruise control. I refuse to give up control of my cars to an over reliance on technology.

So pass the Monkees cassette tape and get off my lawn.

I mean for the most part, if I was recommending a Z to someone I would also say get an HR. Less chance of oil burning issues, more kinks worked out I mean my 141k (now 154k) mile 07 HR has been solid. Entirely based on personal experience though, my buddy's shop we get in a lot of DEs for various MAF, Oil burning, coil pack, valve cover gasket issues, etc. Not saying they aren't potential issues for the HR, but personal experience I would recommend one.

Issues aside, they are definitely elevated more than needed over DE motors lol.

Because Revup problems...
(it's better now with the built engine, even though it's built for boost)

Oh, I totally agree. Were I making a recommendation (like I did to my son), HR for sure. But.... a well serviced, low miles DE is nothing to ignore. I loved all of my HR/VHRs; but guess what's still left in the garage...

I don't even think S2000 owners bash each other about the AP1 and AP2 half as bad as G/Z youngins do between DE and HR.

Coming from an 03 AP1 to an 07 HR I can assure you the AP1/AP2 debate is much larger. I'd of been happy with a DE, was ecstatic to find an HR for what I paid. All I knew for sure was I didn't want a RevUp 05 35th or 06. I'm sure many are alright, but I wasn't willing to risk the oil burning problems.
