Default Service Engine Soon Light.

Well I guess I made history today. My car is finally broken in....I did my first run to 6000 rpm and drove it alittle harder than normal. I havent broken 4500 rpm to this day. It felt fast and made me very excited to see what the car can do.

When I got it up the rpm every thing was fine...down shifted a couple times ...then when i resumed normal driving and was slowing down to go through the toll booth...the car died...meaning complete power loss. I restarted the car...and everything was ok except now in the tach I got "Service Engine Soon" that stays on.

I was like crap i barely road it hard. I went to the nissan dealer and they said they are sure its something minor and its safe to drive with the light on....My car drives fine just a gay light on now.

Well I hope its no big deal but i think I'm the first to go in with the "service engine soon" light on.

Yeah it's probably a minor thing or a false alarm they'll just reset the light.

Luckily the engine shut off while you at the toll booth, otherwise, it could be a safety problem. Just imagine the engine shut off while crising at 70 mph. This doesn't sound good for everyone else. Hopefully, this is an exception.

Default Did you overfill the gas tank, or not tighten it right (3-clicks)?

When the pump stops do NOT add any more fuel.

Also, make sure the gas cap clicks at least 3 or 4 times.

I had a light come on. Gas tank not holding pressure. Quick diagnostic, no problems, no more light.

BTW - I was at about a 1/4 tank when the light came on???

Next time you're at Bankston in Lewisville, ask for Shahram Jalilian. He is a personal friend and fellow 300ZX twin turbo owner. Tell him I referred you to him.

Michael.

No, you don't understand. relldog in his post meant that over-filling the tank and not fully sealing the gas cap are two common things that can cause the light to come on. Once the light comes on, you must reset the computer to turn it off. To reset it yourself, take off the ground battery post for 15 minutes. This will probably also reset a lot of other stuff, like your radio preset buttons, but so will the dealership.

Normally I would reset it myself using the above procedure once and only take it to the dealership if it happens again. Chance are that the dealership will just reset it and say "come back if it happens again" anyway. Since the car is so new, though, you may be better off taking it on in.

HOLY SH*T Abyss! No wonder your check engine light came on and your car died. It probably overheated in your garage!

Which one was your girlfriend?

(The one with the Larger CUP size----abyss added this info)

On some cars, after the check engine light comes on due to gas cap problems, it will reset by itself after a few starts with normal gas cap pressure. This happened on my SLK230.

Default Quick Procedure

This is a quick procedure. Take it to the dealership. They'll plug in a computer into your dash and you'll get a report that will tell you exactly what happed, time, RPMs, speed, etc.

They'll pump up the gas line, check to see if the pressure holds constant and send you on your way.

No appoinment needed. The techs will be more than accomodating just to look under your hood.

Jason-

Just to second what others have said above- I'd bet 100 bucks that there is nothing wrong w/ your Z- my parents '01 Maxima had the check engine light come on when the car was less than 2000 miles old- it was just the gas cap being loose (the check engine light refers to the possible emisions control problems that can arise from a faulty cap) - anyway, don't stress it too much- if it is anything more serious than that, I'm sure your dealer will take care of it under warrenty.

best of luck

EThan
