Default Volks with satin/flat black finish owners...

To fully protect what seems to be a very vulnerable finish on my new CE28N Time Attacks, i had a couple of questions...

1. What do you guys use for tire shine?? I know I have to keep this stuff off of the wheels, but some of it will inevitably get on the wheels so i want to know the specific brands of tire shine that wont hurt this finish.

I also prefer that this not be a spray on, and i also dont really want a gel, but a non-viscous substance that i can apply with a sponge or rag and then wipe off.

Also, any other tips on maintaining this Volk finish would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance

P.S. Yes, ive searched and read the whole "How to maintain your Volks" thread.

For tires I recommend the Poorboy's World Bold n Bright. It's a water based formula that is good for the tires and will not harm the wheels finish. Apply a light coating if you like a bold yet not overly glossy finish. Apply a heavy coating or a second coating if your prefer a more glossy finish. This dressing will actual be absorbed into the rubber and it also nourishes the rubber. After about 15 minutes it should be pretty dry and fully absorbed in to the rubber. Other tire dressings that use lots of silicone will often sit on the surface of the tire and can be easily slung on to the paint, wheels, etc. I pour a small amount on a tire dressing applicator and just apply a nice even coating of product. I try avoid getting the dressing on the treads or in large grooves that may trap large amounts of tire dressing.

I would clean the wheels with a pH neutral cleaner and avoid overly strong formulas. I really like the P21S Wheel Gel, Chemical Guys Wheel and Rim Citrus Cleaner and the Chemical Guys Sticky Gel Wheel and Rim Citrus Cleaner. All three of these are very safe cleaning formulas that won't harm your wheel or tires if you get some on them. While cleaning make sure you use a good sponge or towel and rinse it frequently while cleaning.

After you have cleaned your wheels I highly recommend protecting them with a coating of the Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant. Just hand apply one light coating and buff off the excess residue with a clean towel. The micro barrier of protection helps resist build ups and makes future cleaning much easier. Best of all the Wheel Sealant is our December special so you can get it for $11.99 instead of the regular $17.99.

We offer 10% off on all these products to forum members with the coupon code 10off350z. We also have free shipping on orders over $150 and $5 flat rate shipping on orders under $150 through December. Let me know if you have any other questions about your wheel and tire care routine.

Let me put it this way. if P21s will hurt your wheels everything will. Ive used it on more expensive/ nicer wheels than volks and it has done no harm what soever. The tire shine greg recommended is a good one and will not hurt anything. i suggest picking up a swissvax or zymol wheel brush to clean the face of the wheels with, as well as an ez detail brush to clean the barrels of the wheels. You also need a tire cleaner to clean the tires so the tire shine will stick and look better. I suggest TAW(undiluted) or grime reaper (diluted 5:1 if your worried about the finish, as long as its not raw aluminum I use it 1:1)

Nothing else needs to be said. I love all of P21S lineup, but their wheel care is about as gentle as it gets. Definately invest in a good wheel wax, I have used the Menzerna sealant Full Molecular Jacket and have been very happy with the results, but some prefer the longer lasting Jet Seal 109 over FMJ or wheel waxes. I am getting my wheels polished in a couple weeks, my father borrowed the car and curbed two of the wheels. I can't live with them and am going with the polished lip to avoid the hassles of worrying about the clearcoat again. I like detailing my cars regularly, so polishing the wheels will just be antother step in the process.

Sorry but you Volk guys make me giggle. Like the wheels must be treated with the same care as a baby’s ***.

Their anondized finish looks great, but it is a pain to take care of. I have seen too many with chemical burn in or even stains from sling. The wheels look great when cared for, but at this point I am just having them polished in order to not worry about every chemical that gets on them. I don't think I will be purchasing wheels that require as much care for the next car.

Do you apply the Poor Boys' Wheel Sealant with a tire dressing applicator or a rag or something else?

I like F21. Water soluble. Put it on a white towel then wipe the side walls.

Glad to hear the information was helpful. I'm confident you'll love the safety and effectiveness of those products I mentioned.

I recommend you never cross-contaminate a pad, towel, applicator, etc. by putting two different products on it. I use one towel, applicator, etc. for one product/job and that is it. Never mix products because you may be doing more harm than good. I typically apply the Wheel Sealant with a Microfiber Applicator and buff off the excess with a microfiber towel. Most importantly just make sure the applicator is clean and paint safe (to ensure you don't add micro-scratches to the wheels.

Let me know if you have any other questions about these products.

I wouldn't use anything after another product was on it, just wondering if a new Tire Dressing Applicator could be used for the wheel sealant. Is the Microfiber Applicator able to get into all the crevices of the wheel without much problem?

Will more than one coat of the wheel sealant or applying it more often be beneficial?

The yellow foam pads from Meguiars are cheap and readily available and will work well with the wheel wax. I always do a second coat to ensure any missed spots from the first go round get covered, a second coat has minimal effect on the longevity of the product. I would reapply monthly.

You could probably use the tire dressing applicator but it may not be the ideal tool. Any clean foam applicator or microfiber towel should work. Just about any applicator should work unless you have any really tight crevices. Most normal wheels are pretty easy to work with. More coats of sealant will add more protection. A lot of people like to do two coats for extra protection, but it really comes down to personal preference. Let me know if you have any other questions.
