You can get helmets at a sporting goods store (Gandor Mtn, Academy) for $50-$75. It has to be full face for the track.

The first run you'll be nervous and afraid you're going to screw up and not wanting to be embarrassed. After that, the jitters go away and all you'll be concerened about is doing better. You don't even notice the people in the stands watching you run.
