Fighters dedicate time and effort to train in mixed martial arts fighting
_________________________________________________________
Cage fighting is a sport that has been on the rise since the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993.

UFC is becoming much more than a sport- it is becoming a lifestyle for many young people.

With “The Ultimate Fighter” becoming one of the highest ranked shows on the Spike TV network, and Pay-Per-View buy rates surpassing 600,000 buys, cage fighting is more popular than ever.

The rules are simple. Groin strikes, head butting, eye gouging, biting, hair pulling, and strikes to the throat, spine or back of the head are illegal. Fights can end via submission, knockout, technical knockout, decision, draw, disqualification, and forfeit.

The types of fighting in the sport are very diverse as it is mixed martial arts, consist of submission wrestling, kickboxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, and jiu-jitsu. With fights consisting of three five-minute rounds for normal bouts and championship fights consisting of five five-minute rounds, training and endurance are factors.

According to MCC alumni Tom Gavrilos, president of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gear, “It takes a lot of sacrifices to train. These fighters sacrifice many things to achieve their goal to become a cage fighter. It’s a combination of arts. Not a set combo, but a combo nonetheless.”

Gavrilos knows first hand of this sacrifice, as he is also training fulltime under Santino DeFranco, an Arizona fighter who has wins against professional UFC fighter Melvin Guilard.

Training is rigorous in that one must have to maintain a certain weight for the weight class to compete. The weight classes range from flyweight (125 lbs. and below) to super heavyweight (265 lbs. and above).

Gavrilos appreciates the strategy required for the sport. “It’s a sport where technique can outmatch strength,” Gavrilos explained. “It pushes you to the limit both mentally and physically,” he added.

Training for forums such as UFC and Rage in the Cage demands a lifestyle that separates itself from other sports.

“The great thing about MMA that separates it from all other sports is its versatility. You have people from so many different backgrounds all competing in one sport,” Gavrilos explained.

“The future of MMA is looking very bright with its new popularity and charismatic fighters,” said Santino DeFranco, a trainer and fighter at AZ Combat Sports.
Gavrilos noted that MMA is not just a male sport.

“MMA is predominantly a male sport, however, there are many women fighters that participate and watch. There are at least 10 women that train kickboxing at AZ Combat and 2-3 that have fought MMA. Every-so-often a professional event will feature women MMA and although it is not too common it’s by no means a rarity,” added Gavrilos.

Arizona offers some of the best training facilities with the best trainers. Gavrilos’ fellow MCC alumni Ray Steinbeiss ranks as one of the top fighters from Arizona.
Places such as Arizona Combat Sports specialize in MMA fighting ranging from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission wrestling to beginning and advanced kickboxing. Trainers Trevor Lally and Gustavo Dantas, both cage fighting veterans, help work on skills necessary to succeed in MMA.

For more information on learning how to train for MMA, contact AZ Combat sports at (480) 517-1960 or www.azcombatsports.com. Gavrilos, who also teaches, encourages anyone who is interested to contact him at www.brazilianjiujitsugear.com.
