Default Calling Will, Super Genius...;)

Will, I trust your judgment on all things automotive, and I'd like your opinion on something. I normally run Amsoil in my TT G35, and recently when I wazs buying my years supply of oil from Amsoil, I ran across this Apparently Amsoil is now making a racing version of their multiweight oils, for high temp, high HP, turbocharged or high compression engines, which really fits my G to a T.

From their website
AMSOIL Dominator® Synthetic 10W-30 Racing Oil (RD30) provides superior performance and maximum protection in high-performance and racing applications. Formulated to withstand the elevated RPM, high temperatures and shock-loading common to racing applications, Dominator Synthetic 10W-30 Racing Oil delivers superior performance and maximum protection in extreme conditions.
Whats your opinion on this? Marketing gimmick, or possibly worth it?

Dave

Dave, thanks for the kind words. I hope you and your wife are doing well out in CA, enjoying the sun and world-class racing facilities available to you.

Amsoil does not make a bad product. If you want to try it, go for it without worry. I'm sure it will perform flawlessly for you and maintain its specifications under whatever duress your engine throws at it.

I would also say, that it is a racing oil, and to not be quick to use a product designed for racing when your car is also a daily driver. What percentage of your time is really spent on the track? Maybe 10% of the total mileage you've racked up?

If you were planning on using this oil just for track days, and then changing it out, then so be it. However, there are oils that will be suitable for your street use and track days without issue. If I were you, with your car, I would choose the 10W-40 AMO product from Amsoil's line-up. Where you live, the 10W-xx cold viscosity will be fine, and the product is suitable for mixed use of street and track without worry.

The Dominator's specs and MSDS show a mostly PAO oil with a healthy dose of additives. The NOACK is, however, higher than their regular ASL 5W-30, and the four-ball wear test score is worse. I would imagine this oil is designed for constant, high rpm abuse where a higher HTHS score is paramount, with higher oxidative stability measured over a longer amount of time. I think it sacrifices some street-ability in the form of start-up wear and longevity as a result, and the additives are not in SAE or API spec because they are detrimental to catalytic converters at those levels. The primary role of this oil is for real racing, as in NASCAR or USTCC. I doubt your track days and NASA events will be nearly as strenuous.

The 10W-40 will be suitable for double duty, has good UOA numbers behind it, and has a higher HTHS than the Dominator 5W-30 as a result of the higher weight. The NOACK is lower, and the wear scar from the four-ball is also lower. It is formulated for turbo engines, and the high heat of diesels, and is a durable oil for long drains. It is approved for gas engines and is API SL certified, and costs less. I would use the AMO and do double duty on it.

If you really want to see how it's doing, then get a UOA after use, and you can compare the results to a second UOA using the Dominator.

Good to hear from you, Dave,

Will

Thanks, Will. For some reason, I missed your reply. I appreciate the information, and it makes sense. I already use AMO 10W-40 for my daily driving, and I do change the oil right before a race weekend. I would rather spend the money on a possibly un-needed oil change, then spend a lot more money on a new engine, and with the turbos, my poor VQ35 does get pretty warm at the track.

By the way, CA is great, but due to money, I have not yet been to the track out here yet, unfortunately. Don't worry, though, there is no way I will spend two years here and not hit all the great tracks around here.

Take care, and enjoy CO
Dave

I thought you went on Laguna Seca already? If you haven't, my brother races there often with the Porcshe car club. I think the fees are about $300. Those Porsche guys are really friendly and helpful. They also host Auto-Cross for about $100. Also check out Hookedondriving.com. They also offer a lot of track days for a decent price. They seem to have an event for every weekend.

Nope haven't been yet. The entry fees aren't really the problem, it's those, combined with the gas I use on a full day at the track, plus the tire wear, and the brake pad wear. Anyway, I'm just trying to budget it all out.
