i was just wondering because i went from a 2000 honda civic Si in 2002 which almost got jacked 2wice and bought my '04 Z in Aug. 2003 and i actually daily drive my car ... anyone know any stories of Z's being stripped or jacked or is that just a Honda Civic and integra thing...btw i hear S13's & S14's are getting jacked too as well for the SR20DET's and wheels?

I don't hear of 350Z thefts very often at all. It's all anecdotal though, I'm not sure where you could find the stats.

 

i kno hondas get jacked alot. i kno ppl who can break in2 a honda w/ a quarter, but never heard of z's gettin jacked. my friends ls turbo'd hatch got jacked twice. the last time they took his turbo setup.

 

I haven't heard of a single Z getting jacked.
Maybe it's due to the fact that you can't start the car w/o
our specially chipped key?

 

If you search arhieves, you find a story about 350Z getting stolen but the car didn't go very far. Lots of damage but car would not go.

 

Z's have gotten stollen before. I'm not sure on the details because it isn't something you hear about every day but it does happen.

I don't know about them being about to start it up w/o the key. They would have to request one from the dealer and that's not as easy as it seems. The only way I would think is someone towing it away.

 

Any car can get jacked anywhere, it all depends on what area (ghetto/rich) you park your car and if it can be easily seen in every angle vs. parking in a dark corner of a parking lot complex.

 

theifs can get around the imobilizer. They do it all the time.

that being said Id compare the 350z to the s2000, yes they are stolen but not in high demand

 

I would be more worried the Z being vandalized than stolen.

 

I'd love to see that list next to the list of the 10 most popular cars on the road. Any statistics/math people reading this? That list of stolen cars is not very useful without comparing it to the list of cars actually on the road, then coming up with the "expected" rate of theft per car.

For example, assume there are 100,000 honda accords on the road, and also assume that there are 1,000 BMW 323's on the road. Now let's say 10 BMW's get stolen, and 20 honda accords get stolen. Then answer the question: If _I_ buy a honda accord, is it more or less likely to get stolen than if I bought a BMW 323.

In this example, twice as many hondas got stolen, but it's 0.02%, while 1% of BMW's got stolen. So, the fact that the honda accord is the most stolen car shouldn't surprise anyone, since it's also one of the most popular cars (maybe _the_ most popular?).

These aren't real stats, just numbers I made up for the example.

 

Most of those cars are over 10 years old, with the lack of the technology in anti-theft systems we have today.

For the Z, it probably is steal-able, but it definitely would be harder than the average car. Owning a tow-truck company probably would be easiest.

I bought my 350Z in oct. of 06. Had a carfax on it when I got it and bad news mine got stolen.

One of my driving instructors at Driver's Edge (Chuck) had his 350Z carjacked when he was in New Orleans!

 

biggest reason to steal a car is to turn around an sell it...easier to sell 10 year old hondas, ford, etc for 2 or 3 thousand..or even 2 or 3 hundred as opposed to trying to turn around a 350z for 20g's...it would raise a lot of eyebrows if you were trying to ditch a 350z for 2 grand....it all about the quick CASH not stealing a car and having someone have to finance it in order to buy it off of you...

obviously its easier to vandalize a car than steal it, but i think theifs go for the easiest car they can. just looking at a Z it looks well made and harder to steal than a civic.

 

I would think the lists are reported on a per capita basis.
I see where you are coming from but I think this is too simplistic a model to translate to the real world very well. For theives, common cars are common knowledge. In planning a theft their ignition systems, entrance methods, and other safe guards are well known and researched and therefore any pitfalls can be anticipated and dealt with quickly. Once a theif has the car they have to sell it or part it out of course. Who needs parts? The most common cars on the road? Or a specialty more upscale vehicle? What demographic of people are looking for cheap black market parts, owners of cheap 10 year old sedans, or owners of relatively expensive to own, maintain, and insure specialty vehicles? Which vehicles are more likely to arouse the suspicions of police? Which vehicles are more time consuming due to things like electronic immobilizers? I'm sure there are countless other variables. The bottom line is that virtually all of them favour the theft of common vehicles. So a linear model isn't really possible.
