FWIW my wife absolutely loooooves her 3-series BMW. I can't get comfortable in the damn thing but she couldn't be happier and it rides nice as a passenger. You can find a really nice one for well under $20k here in So Cal.

ehh maintenence on used bimmers = no good. if she were to get a bimmer, id make her lease a new one... so she doesnt have to pay for maintenence.

How about a Z? In terms of a new car in that price range, I'd consider a scion.

+1 on the Honda FIT!
Cheap car, great gas mileage, decent looks, if thats what your looking for. Slap some springs and rims on it and its good to go!
I think thats gonna be my next car once the wheels fall off of my current commuter car (Now at 200,231 miles!!).
