Default Registering my Z in Cali

Gonna put this off as long as possible, since my TX registration is good through Nov and I'm not working here yet, but when I do need to register my car, what will I need to do? I read the following on the CA DMV site:

Registering the vehicle
The following is required to register a nonresident vehicle:

1. An Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) signed by all registered owners, showing the name and address of the lienholder (legal owner), if any.
2. Last issued out-of-state title, unless held by the lienholder/legal owner (This applies only if there is not a change of registered owner.)
3. Last issued registration certificate, if the applicant is the same as the registered owner shown on the out-of-state title and the vehicle entered California with valid out-of-state registration, or if the title has been lost.
4. Bill of Sale if the person from whom you are buying the vehicle purchased it from the registered owner shown on the title.
5. Odometer disclosure statement signed by the seller and buyer if the vehicle is less than ten model years old.
6. The vehicle must be inspected by an authorized DMV employee, law enforcement officer, or a licensed vehicle verifier. These inspections are most easily obtained by bringing the vehicle to the nearest DMV, where there is no extra fee charged for the inspection. For faster service, make an appointment.
7. Smog certification, if applicable
8. Weight certificate, if applicable
9. Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (REG 4008) form for commercial motor vehicles (pickups with unladen weight of 8,000 lbs. or less are exempt from this requirement)
10. Appropriate Fees
I don't think I'll have problems with Smog testing, but #6 concerns me, as far as my mods go. I have a Popcharger, but it's CARB legal, but I also have a Kinetix V+ plenum, UR pullies and a catch can that's hard to miss, as well as the 35% tint on my front windows. Whats going to happen or what will I need to do to get my car registered here?

I believe you're only supposed to have 10 days to register it once you arrive here.

You should be fine. My car had a Georgia title on it and I had to go to the DMV and pretty much after you have paid the dmv person with the smog check and all that, if you want to have it registered or get a CA title they will have you pull around the back, an employee will look over the car and give you a slip of paper to go show back inside and you will be done.

what they looked for are license plate (back is fine if you dont have front), vin numbers in door/under hood/dashboard, and that was pretty much it.

Mine was a salvage title and also had a cracked windshield but they didnt go over that ior give crap for window tinting.

Just checking for VIN thats all....

You can be here with out of state tags as long as you want until you rent or own a residence or get a job, after which you have 10 days. Even then, it's easy info. to fudge.

Hmm, well that's cool if that's all it is. I guess it's the cops that are the biggest problem with tint and aftermarket stuff?

yes they are, just roll down the windows if they are next to you.

But basically all you will need to do for your DMV question is give them the info and then they will tell you to go outside, once the guy is done you come back in, pay the registration fees and your off.

Good luck with all of this!

And 35% tint in So Cal is basically like not having tint. Most people have darker windows than that and I don't think a cop would pull you over just for that.

I know a guy that kept his previous state registration for a year and a half before transferring it to California. Just make sure when they ask what date you brought the car here you put with in the last week or two. Otherwise they will charge you all the fees for as long as the car has been in this state.

Hey - I moved here from Connecticut 2 yrs ago and JUST registered my Accord which has been here the same length - from CT to CA. reg. Cost me $120...and I had CA parking tickets from over a year ago too.
I was just really, really nice to the lady at the DMV and told her my sister just drove the car out for a family transfer this week. The DMV lady was happy someone was being polite to her so she didnt give a crap.

However...My hasty fiance paid $450 3 months after we got here because the DMV people were having a bad day and charged him a lot of late fees and use fees. I say, if in doubt, get outta line and try back another day.

Make sure you get your car smogged first (info goes straight from the smog shop to the DMV's computers) and bring to the DMV: your car, the title, possibly your insurance if its a new car, $$$, your old registration...and make sure the car looks reasonably legal. Oh yeah, and a smile for the DMV workers.
