Default Temp Transit Tags in California?

If I am from out of state and purchase a car in California, is there an easy way to get temp transit tags, so I can drive the car back home?

I don't think CA has temp tags. I'm originally from CT so I was kinda surprized at first too...and what I have seen is:

You either take the plates that are on the car at the dealer

or:

Drive around without a plate, or with a decorative advertising plate that says the dealer's name, or the brand of car, or a tacky airbrushed tiger, etc.

Perhaps you can go the the CO DMV and get plates beforehand? Or this may or may not be illegal (not illegal in CT, but I believe it is in CA), but take plates off your other car/borrow them from someone else and put on your new car so you don't stand out, or so police can find you/contact you if you get pulled over.
