Question 5th Gear Grinds!?!?!

Hey Everyone.

I have a problem with 5th gear. I shift normally to 2nd, 3rd, 4th. BUT when I get to 5th. It grinds. I have to shift pretty slowly for it not to grind. It's weird. It's like it takes long for the gate to open. And it's not a question that my hand is faster than my foot. It only happens on fifth and it's starting to bug/worry me. Any ideas???

PS. I haven't taken it to a shop yet.

THANKS.

EDIT: I've been reading some threads and some people say they change their Trans Fluid around 30k miles. I'm at about 31k now. Maybe I should have that done?

My warranty expired a year ago. I'm SOL man.

EDIT: I read my warranty that the powertrain is 5yrs/60k miles. I'm good on that. Scared though, the dealer might pull some ish on me because I'm young. ie Abuse.

Down shifting from 6th to 5th or getting out of 5th? I only grind going into 5th. Also, say I don't get a new tranny if this is my problem...What would happen if I just left this as is.

this is a known issue with z's 03-04. you have bad synchros. It'll cost you 1200-1800, since they prolly have to take the tranny out.

Known issue. Solution: take it to dealer, reprodude problem for them and get new tranny under your powertrain warranty. Problem solved.

I've got to take mine in for this as well. 4-5 and 6-5 shifts are both bad unless I shift really slow (let the revs drop below 2k). If the dealer won't address it under warrany, go try another dealer.

So. I went to Superior Nissan today to have them check it out. Don't get me wrong, the service and attitude at Superior are great BUT, I think I got BSed. The tech said it may have to do with the clutch. I told him I doubt that because it only happens in 5th gear. I replicated the situation and gave it a quick shift to 5th, because it doesn't grind if you baby it which is what they do. He says that it is my driving but I showed him that it doesn't happen in any other gear and demonstrated in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. He told me to get a second opinion. The tech was nice about it and all. He didn't talk condescendingly. I still think he was giving me BS. Any ideas what to do now?

That's a typical dealer response.

Was the "diagnostic" free at least? If so I would try another dealer. I've heard West Covina Nissan is real good about things like this but I've never been there myself.

Edit: I'm going to be trying Tustin Nissan hopefully next week.

It was free. I picked up StopTech rotors at West Covina Nissan a few months back. I will try there if Cerritos Nissan can't help. I'm not to close to WestCo. BUT I'll go as far as the Bay if they can fix it.

Well my woes are soon to be over. I took my Z to Cerritos Nissan early this morning and rode with the tech. He observed that the gear is grinding told me that it's most likely the tranny. I got a call from my Service Adviser that it indeed was the synchros and I will be getting a new tranny.
Thanks guys for the help and to Cerritos Nissan for the great service.
