unlocking phones is pretty simple and normally only requires them to know your IMEI code. depending on which phone you have, ebay is usually the cheapest option for unlocking phones.

I unlocked my HTC Dream from Rogers in Canada within 10minutes of end of auction on EBay. Cost me $5.

what carrier are you with? You can just call customer service for the carrier your with for the phone and tell them you are going overseas and would like to use that phone with another sim card from another country or use a story along those lines. They will either give you the "unlock code" through the phone or email it to you. I've done this numerous times with at&t and tmobile phones.
