My friend I have my own business and I had a steady 40k job and I quit to go back to school, because once I am out this May, I am looking to make at least 60k

Go the school and get an education, it will lead you to a better life!

I graduated with a degree in finance and I have had 0 luck in finding a job. Before i graduated I worked for a national cell phone carrier and moved up to assistant manager making 65k/ year. When I got fired I didn't look for another manager position in a retail store where I could be making the same if not more, I am looking for a position that will pay me less but involves work that has to do with what I want to do. I didn't get my degree to manage a retail store, I got my degree to analyze the market and help people retire. The first few years I will be making less but in the long run I will be happier. Without a degree that wouldn't be possible and I would be stuck in an environment I am now happy with. Before I finished school I couldn't wait to get out and work in the real world.... now that I am looking into graduate school because I miss school. Also, like mentioned many times above, it doesn't hurt to get your degree and with such a crappy job market right now you might as well finish school.

Unless you have the next hot idea then stay in school. The "millionaires" that you read about dropping out of college (Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Hugh Hefner, etc), had great ideas and went to top 5 colleges (Harvard, MIT, etc) in the country. These people were genius' to begin with.

These days, if you want a good paying job, a bachelor degree isnt even enough. Depending on what you want to do, MBA and Master's are required. A bachelor degree is like a high school diploma now. More than the education it shows employers that you have initiative and were dedicated to something and saw it through for however long it takes.

Personally, I have a BS in Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science and now design unmanned airplanes for the military. My company does hire people without a degree for engineering positions and wont even consider you for some positions even if you have been at the company for a long time and moved up the ladder if you dont meet the education requirements. I will soon be going back for an MBA.

My 2 cents..

Stay in school. The job market isn't going to suck forever and then your friends who went to those good schools and have work experience are going to land the jobs that they would have landed a few years ago and you will be wishing you had your bachelors.

As for me, BS in Physiological Science (Systems Anatomy and Physiology) and working a job that I am way over qualified for but making okay money (>35 + ridiculously good benefits) while waiting to start med school in fall.

If you have the financial means to finish, then there is no reason not to.

Even though you currently plan to be self employed the rest of your life, it's still a good credential to have when you sell yourself to clients. Plus if you are running your own company, while experience teaches you a lot, school can still teach you how to improve your own business. Especially if it's a business degree.

Believe me, I've been working in the financial industry for almost 6 years. I just recently got into Pepperdine's business school and i'm still learning new things about my industry or how to operate more efficiently. I just took a promotion this past November into my company's Secondary Marketing Dept(currently the most critical department within my company) and I honestly don't believe I would have been given any consideration had not been able to simply state I was currently enrolled at a major / respectable degree/program.

To conclude, while you may be self employed now, things may change in the future. Without the degree, your going to have a hard time getting an interview at worthwhile companies.

to the OP: where do you think million dollar ideas come from? ... from dancing on the street corner waving the "WE BUY YOUR GOLD" signs while rocking out to KDAY in a Gorilla suit? yea no.

it's from applying the lessons learned in school.

dropping out of school in today's stagnant job market is probably the worse thing you can do in the long term. If you don't think you'll ever use your business administration degree, get a degree in something that interests you. I never understood people getting an education in a field that you never have any intentions in real world applications.

to answer your question, no i could not do what i do w/o my degree.

for salary information you can easily goto here:

and enter your field.

got B.S from ucsd and currently am in UCSD-Med. i seriously do not see myself as a doc but i have to do it bc my father wants me to be a doc.

if u make enough money, more than 80k a year, right now, then i think u should quit school. i dont think ur bs will earn u more than that.

my uncle does not have a bs degree. he is a college dropped out and he earns more money than my father. He is retired and still makes around 190k a year. U have to use your mind. College degree will not give u anything other then a job that not likely making u a millionaire. His properties is over 10mil. i think he is a millionaire but i am not sure what is a definition of a millionaire is. i wish my uncle doesnt have children so when he die i will get his properties. but i am out of luck

My uncle bought lots of apartment complexes and rent it out. that is how he makes such money. retired at the age of 45!!!!

BUT CONSIDER THIS:

U MUST ENJOY WHAT YOU DO OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT LAST LONG! find something that u like to do. if u really like what u are doing right now....... do it.......

Since you are asking.. prob just stay in school til you find your "path"
i agree with you!!!

getting a bs or ms or even phd will force u to work for other people. They will be taking money of your work.

if u have a business now, work hard on it. When u have enough money extend your business and make those with bs, ms, phd, or even md to work for you.

it is nothing sweeter than legally taking your share of money of other people hard work!!!!

i realized lots of people on this forum are giving OPr advice to work for other people but not giving advice of how to make other people working for OP.

we have a lot of followers!!!

if u want to use short cut, you should become a drug dealer or open a night club. sell drug in your own night club. and then flee to mexico or something.

SO, what do you do? Did you finish school? How well are you doing financially?

I think you're confused on why people go to school. You want to run your own business and become successful, correct? You are in school for business admin. Do they teach you things about business? Like how to make money and run businesses? Financial planning, etc? To me it sounds like keeping your butt in school to LEARN THE INFORMATION instead of just getting a degree to hang on the wall should be the most important thing if you want to be a successful business owner.

I don't know, call me crazy but business school is there to teach you how to make money in business, not to just have a degree on the wall. That's what all schools do. Law degree: teach you how to be a good laywer. Engineering degree: teach you how to be a successful engineer. and the list goes on. Could you learn how to be an engineer on your own and open a private engineering firm? yes you could. Would you be as successful as the person who was taught by people who have been there and done that? no. When it comes to private business or being your own boss you still need an education to run your business and be successful and not just have a degree so somebody hires you.

Trust me, you'll be screwing yourself over if you don't stay in school and learn how to be the best as business.

You're incorrect. I know MANY more MD's and Phd's that are self employeed. Researchers that have phd's are self employeed. They get grants to go do their own work. That's how they make money. There are more primary care physicians in the US than any other physician with a great deal of those owning their own practices. So they are their own boss as an MD.

Getting an MBA doesn't mean you will work for someone else and "give away" your money. If you look at who is more successful: uneducated business owner or business owner with an MBA it will be the MBA HANDS DOWN

An education will teach you how to properly run your PRIVATE BUSINESS. ya, maybe some people have a business with no education and it works but also when the ecomony is bad and they are losing money they HIRE consultants that have business degrees to tell them how to make their business more successful. Now if you went to school and had that education already would you need to pay some outside person to tell you how to run your business? no

If you are a private business owner with a degree in accounting would you have to hire an accounting firm to do your taxes? no, you would save money because you could do all your finances yourself and you would know how to properly save yourself money.

Education isn't just having a piece of paper to show someone and get them to hire you. Education helps you run your own private businesses but only if you take the time to learn the information and not just make the grades to graduate.

I'm scared to see that all these people think learning business is a waste of time if they want to be a private business owner.

How about this right here:
http://www.businessknowhow.com/start...ss-failure.htm
why small businesses fail. only 51% of businesses survive past 5 years.

#2 reason they fail is exactly what i'm talking about:

"Many a report on business failures cites poor management as the number one reason for failure. New business owners frequently lack relevant business and management expertise in areas such as finance, purchasing, selling, production, and hiring and managing employees. "

Wow, look at that...and education in finance appears that it would help out some when attempting to run a private business.

I'm pretty sure it didn't take any of my 3 bach degrees and my soon to be doctorate to figure that out.

Stay in school

Go back to school and finish it. I have my BS in Business mgmt and I am now a stay at home dad. Who knows if I will return back to the work force one day or start my own business, but I will be glad that I finished my college education. Trust me, I went to college later in life, after my stint in the military and it was tough when I started school, until I was in my upper division courses. Stick it out, finish and you will look back on this thread and get a good laugh at it.

Having a degree is a PLUS. But from my experience, the degree acts as a "VIP" card in most professional fields - it'll just get you through the door and screening.

As bad as it sounds - again, my experience - there are these other factors to consider:
1) Who you know, THEN what you know about who you know.
2) Relationships and for some, alumni from college.

That being said, I would strongly suggest you finish school. Take a real world look at the current climate. People are struggling for jobs and employers now can be even more critical in who they hire, even interview. My GF works for one of the biggest electronics companies in the world (Human Resources) - I work for one of the top energy drinks in the world (Design/Media/Marketing) - and I can tell you now, having a degree definitely helps.

It is in YOUR best interest to make yourself an extraordinary candidate and having an "asset" like a degree is only a win. You will not regret school...unless you are one of those folks who will go through motions just because college "feels" like the right thing to do...then when they graduate, become lazy. Do it for yourself and make sure you do it right. I work FT and still run my own consulting business on the side. Maybe you can balance both? You could do it, don't underestimate yourself and set yourself up for failure.
