Selling my car.... Anything else I need?
Selling my silverstone 2004 Z with 125kmiles, but I've never sold a car privately before, soooo I scoured the California DMV website and made up the following check list. Am I missing anything?
Also tips on selling it? Craigslist of course but anyone use autotrader?
When selling a California registered vehicle, the registered owner of record must:
1) Release ownership by signing on line one of the title (pink slip)
2). Provide the purchaser with evidence of a valid smog certification.
Smog certificates are good for 90 days from the date of inspection.
3). Transfer and Reassignment Form, REG 262). If the title does not have a designated space for this information, a REG 262 reporting the odometer mileage must be signed by both the seller and buyer. The REG 262 cannot be copied. An original must be submitted.
4). Protect Your Liability. Complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability. The seller is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 5 days from the date of sale. After DMV updates the information from the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, you will be cleared from future liability on the vehicle. The purchaser is responsible for reporting the change of ownership to DMV within 10 days from the date of purchase.

If the purchaser offers to pay cash or via cashier's check, make sure you perform the transaction at your bank so that they can verify payment. If you and the purchaser share the same bank, then request to have funds instant transferred and verified in your account.
It may also be wise to issue the buyer a bill of sale and request signature from them after the transaction is completed.
Do not accept any "promises to pay"/personal checks.
Good luck with sale!

Just to add to what Riful said. Make a copy of the buyer's Driver's License if possible. I did that when I sold my last car on Craigslist. The buyer actually buys and sells cars, so transaction was super easy and painless, something rare from a craigslist transaction.
That's a lot of work. When I sold my car, I just:
1.) Grab pink slip, fill in my section (seller) and have him fill in his (buyer)
2.) Photocopy his DL
3.) Meet him at my bank so I can deposit his cash and make sure they're not counterfeit
I didn't hand him smog test results. He can do it himself. Of course, provide it if he asks... When my buyer went to the DMV, DMV told him that seller is "supposed" to give the buyer smog results, not a requirement.

Pretty sure it is a requirement as it's needed to transfer the title...I had to do this recently...

I believe the buyer can also come back to you and claim costs of getting it smogged if a smog check wasn't provided: http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...ns_Part_1.html
This is assuming it's being sold as a road legal car.
The only exemption I found was:
The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).
