Something I should mention that no one else has is this:
Parts for the Z aren't cheap. To make it go fast will take alot of money. Turbo kits/SC kits are between $5000-8000. Then install and tuning. Even the exhaust is more expensive than your average import.
The WRX parts aren't cheap either, but are less expensive than the Z. Not only that, but you have a turbo from the factory.....so making the WRX faster would be WAAAAY cheaper than making a Z faster. Exhaust, downpipe, boost controller and a bigger fuel pump will increase power big time in a turbo car.
Just something to think about when considering the Z or STi.
Not knocking the Z (sh*t, I own one), just shedding some light on the performance facts. I bought my Z for the look of the car and the potential for big power. But if you want to play speed racer in this car, you better have deep pockets.

390 isnt' bad! Is that at the wheels or crank?
And trust me, I know that modding isn't cheap. I've done full exhaust on my car, plus engine management, and all that together was probably around 1500. That's relatively cheap compared to what some people spend, but I didn't want to turn my car into a monster since it's my daily driver. I just wanted more power and less turbo lag, which I was able to accomplish. I doubt I am putting down in my wrx what a STOCK Z makes, so I would probably be happy (at least for now) to keep the Z stock, especially if its under warranty (I've been denied warranty work because of my mods). Oh yeah, I also upgraded my tires on my car over the stock tires, which makes a WORLD of difference. Not sure how the stock tires are on the Z, but I'm running the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's, and those kick *** and take names! Best mod of them all in my opinion. If I do end up getting a Z, I will probably only do the small, relatively inexpensive mods (popcharger, plenum spacer, etc.) rather then go all out.
So just out of curiosity, and be honest with me, what are the things that suck about the stock Z's? (and what years are worse then others?) Suspension, engine, squeaks and rattles, tires, etc? What things would you have wanted to know about before you bought your Z? I'm the type that likes to be an "educated buyer"
Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it!

I totally agree, the new rims on the Z's are sweet, especially with brembos under them! Fortunately I don't carry a lot of stuff in my car (less weight = more fast!!), so the strut bar probably wouldn't matter much to me - I'd probably just fill it with speakers too.

I think the Z comes with potenzas which are awesome tires. I have nothing negative to say about that. I use toyo t1-r now and I love them. Look and handle awesome.
For all us Base model owners, we're wondering why we shouldn't have bought it. I've heard, for best results, start with the Base and go forward. I've also heard Potenzas suck. I like 'em, but don't know sh*t about tires. The worse thing about the Z, IMHO, is the sight lines out the rear. But, then, it probably wouldn't look as cool. Z-ON.
Like I said in an earlier post, everyone is going to have their preference on the looks of a particular car. Personally the "look" of the WRX is what first caught my attention - before I even knew what car it was or who made it. I liked it because it was different then every other car you see out there. That's part of the reason that I got the bright blue color - I like to stand out, instead of having a silver or red or black car like everyone else and their grandma too.
Two things would keep me from getting a base model Z: no LSD and no cruise control. I do know about tires, and Potenza's don't usually suck too bad. I think the Z's are RE050's, if I'm not mistaken. They are a decent tire.
Kinda interesting hearing everyone's opinions, and their so-called WRX bashing
Rock on.
