Default Austin Area

Hey, two of my friends as well as myself are going to move to Austin in June. We have been approved to live in Longhorn Landing which is in Riverside which I heard is not the best of areas. Does anyone have any suggestions on apartments/area to live. We are going to rent for about a year before we buy a house. Thanks guys.

it depends what your budget is.

Riverside has a lot of UT students, partially because it's cheaper than living right near campus, but it's still on the UT shuttle bus route. But the students make the price higher in that area, and the area isn't that great. Unless you want to be on the UT shuttle bus route, you can probably find a better place for the same or less money. There are some pretty inexpensive apartments on Metric Blvd, if you don't mind being in north austin.

I remember me and two friends were chased out of an arcade on riverside once by a young black kid who must have been 8 years old. It may sound funny but in that area, you never know who has a knife or a gun.

When I was going to UT I stayed on Far West Blvd (off of Mopac by 183). It was a nice area and not too expensive. Also on the UT shuttle route. I wouldn't really trust living on the south side... people there scare me! lol

I started my college days living at Riverside for 3 years then I moved to West Campus. Riverside is not really all that bad around the Wickersham to Oltorf area. The bad thing about Riverside is that you have to go through little Mexico from 35 before you can get to where all the students live. I had many friends who lived in or around the University Commons area. The bad things about those type of megaplex student apartments are that the walls are paper thin, people are alway being loud, and the rooms are really small. Far North is a much peaceful location but it's pretty far away. No matter where you start off at ulitmately it would be ideal to move to West Campus. Hook'em Horns!!!

I suggest the 360 area. And I highly suggest you get an apartment with a garage. Austin weather is hot and nasty and you want to do all you can to protect your paint and keep away from parking next to people that dont car if they hit your car. Where are you goinf to be working?

P.S. Riverside is like the south central of california. Its low class and its too close to downtown so you have nonstop traffic. Move out to Manor where I am. Country towns FTW!

The farther east you go down riverside the better it is. If you are close to 35 on riverside you will feel like you live in mexico. Also, I hope your cars aren't too low because the roads are horrible in that area.

Thanks for the heads up about that area and the raods too. Def. want to avoid "little Mexico" and want to have a garage since my car should be done in the next month or two so it will probably be coming to Austin with me and I don't want it getting f*cked up by someone or the sun. A garage wouldn't be necessary though since the Z wouldn't be my daily driver. We want to be close to 6th Street so we can take cabs home and keep it around $20 but don't want to have to worry about someone trying to break into our cars/steal our motorcycles.
As of right now I don't know where I'll work, but last summer when I was in Austin a couple of the bars on 6th Street offered me a job as a bouncer.
PM sent.

Its hard to find a good place downtown and most of the apartment complexes near downtown do not offer a garage. You could always consider renting a house. Im sure you can find something in the area. If you need a cab hollar at me. I work for the biggest company here in Austin.

There are some places on West William Cannon. I can't remember the name but they are on the right side just past the Westgate bowling alley. had a friend who lived there, they were pretty nice. Also there are abunch of new apartment complexes right behind the Metropolitan movie theater off of Oltorf.
