It's not about being too cheap or being broke. It's about the cost/benefit of having him come in. I'm considering a drive from Dallas to Houston to have SGP tune my car. There are a few tuners around DFW as well that can.

If it's going to cost me $700 to have him tune my car and cover his expenses, I'm going to pass. If it's in the $300-$500 range then I may consider it.

i know i for one am happy with my car and tune..... never had a problem with them or with my car..... i mean no offense to any of the other shops out there but how do you know there arent any shady stories out there about the other shops?

i guess like toxic said i guess you just have to go with some one that you trust....

i agree with 100% with your statement. i can understand shops making errors from time to time but for them to deceive them is unforgivable. the stories ive read were pretty horrible, lies, half assed jobs etc... honest mistake are ok in my book, dishonesty is not. for all we know the owner didnt have anything to do with it, sometimes employees are idiots and can ruin the image of the shop without the owner having a hand in it. its nice to hear some good experiences with SGP. if i get more comfortable with the idea, i might just have to take a road trip down there.

You should at least visit the shop and see for yourself. There are lots of good experiences that go unposted on these forums. But it's your car, do what you think is best for it!

And I have personally been told by a friend, who also happens to be a well-respected member on here, not to get any work there. Only reason I would ever consider them is if I lived in near proximity to them. That way, if they F up, I can conveniently bring the car back.

You're exactly right! My friend didn't tell me the whole story b/c he thinks it's fun to lie and withhold information from me.

None of this is your business, but for other people wondering, my friend is very well-respected for his knowledge in FI applications. At one point his car was ranked as having one of the fastest quarter mile times on the boards (yes, it's been documented). His Z had a lot of work done to it, mostly by SGP. He got pissed though when he had to tow his car not once, not twice, but three times to SGP due to their negligence (not exactly the hallmark sign of a good shop). Since I'm in the process of going FI soon, he reminded me again to avoid them and visit Forged or GTM instead. I've decided to do my own labor when it comes to my Z, but that's another story....

The real question you should be asking is WHY DOES SGP HAVE A SKETCHY REPUTATION?? Don't believe me, take a poll.

The other relevant question is: When it comes to our cars, why would anyone want to take the risk of going with a cautionary tale like SGP, when they can easily choose a shop such as Forged, which offers free transportation, and has pretty much a 100% satisfaction rating?

Instead of challenging the integrity of the people I trust, these are the questions you should be focused on. Next time save your ridiculous hypotheticals for your own "friends" and family.

DDS_RACER,

Instead of beating around the bush, why don't you just come out and say what exactly happened and to whom it happened? I'm sure if he's so well-respected and had one of the fastest cars (whenever that was), then most of us would know the story or can just do a search. You being mysterious about it doesn't help anybody's case. BTW, if you could, there's a SHOP EXPERIENCE thread that is stickied in the TX forum. Please post there.

BTW, this thread was originally about flying Jeremy from Performance Factory in from Florida to get tunes/installs done.

Out of respect I will keep my friend's name silent. I will send him a PM and if he wants to respond then that's up to him. 3Three FiveZero, you know this guy.

His identity by the way is really irrelevant. My whole point in bringing him in discussion was this....reading about posted horror stories about how SGP screwed someone over is one thing. But when I personally know someone who can authenticate the bad press SGP gets due to his own dealings with that company, that to me is way more salient and bears a huge factor in my decision making. Why would you take your car to Just Brakes if Channel 4 news say they suck (which they did) and then you hear the same thing from a friend who also took his car there?? It's as simple as that...

Not trying to be mysterious, just respectful. My friend is very well-liked and there's a reason for that. He doesn't go around airing other people's bad laundry. If he wants to elaborate on his experience then that's up to him.
