Boosting... UTEC still acceptable tuner?
I'm in the middle of building my engine, doing a single turbo build. Getting to the point where I have to start thinking about a tuner. I'm not looking for a huge amount of power, probably driving on around 10psi and when needed up around 16psi. That being said I need a tuner that I can switch maps on the fly. I have looked at a bunch of the old threads and found that many people used to love the UTEC, but do people still love it? Is it still acceptable. Seems like it has all the features I want (launch control, map selector). Ive read that it was fairly easy to tune. Any reasons in particular why I shouldn't go with the Turbo XS? Any advise would be great. Thanks in advance.
I'm using a UTEC and just installed my turbo over this winter. There are a lot of software available to integrate a wideband (i'm using LC-1) for making logs/tuning. Someone is selling a utec with map/map selector switch of forum for $300 shipped.
I can't speak for any other tuning for the 350z since i've only used the UTEC MS and SAFC

I know its discontinued but from all the old post I read it was fairly straight forward to use and tune and I can still download base maps for a good starting point.
With the Uprev can you have a map selector? Its got all the same features like launch control?

Hmmm good question. I know Utec is probably cheaper since you will 99% of the time find it used. I know jack squat of actual ECU tuning and I too have been looking into getting a used utec to dab into that world.

Thats another thing I was wondering, is there an add on boost controller for the Utec, where if I change maps it will automatically adjust boost too?
the UTEC can control a solenoid so you can adjust boost and have different boost for dfifferent maps. its actually a really good tuning solution if you are under 600cc injectors.
I will be using 600cc injectors. I just don't want to get it and then wish I had gone with something else or worse, run into issues with the Utec (are they fairly bug free now?). I was reading threads about when they came out and they were having issues. I do like the fact that I can change map and boost on the fly with the flick of a switch. Should come in handy while cruising down the highway. Any of you guys do your own tuning? I heard it was very easy to use the software.
the software is very basic. It is "easy" to use in the sense that the controls are rudementary. Navigating and file transfers are simple once you get the hang of it.
I have 600cc and I'm using UTEC on my twin turbo low boost car. I like it. My tuner actually prefers UTEC for boost cars. Just preference I guess. I have had no problems with it at all and very easy and simple to use.
I had nothing but issues with every UTEC I owned. Tuning wise they get the job done - my car was fast. But random CEL's, dead batteries, boost transition hiccups, and eventually blown coil packs pushed me over to the Uprev camp and I haven't looked back
