Alternative to K&N drop in air filters ..
Went to Summit Racing last week to get some K&N air filters for my 07 350z ..
got them a year ago for my camaro and they had a summit brand which was cheaper, but the same EXACT filter (came with a K&N sticker but filter was in a different box)
the K&N was $53 each and they had to take two weeks to order
kept looking and they had a "SPECTRE" air filter listed under "07 350z" and it said in stock on the computer at home .. the thing that sold them was $22 EACH
got to summit in McDonough, GA and they were in stock at the summit racing in ohio .. .. so I ordered them and they came today (two business days )
BUT .. over the weekend I found out that there are two different K&N filters .. one for 03 to 06 and another for our HR 07/08 dual intakes
of course the smart ones at summit listed it under 03 to 07 350z's
got the filters today and was just gonna return them but curious I looked at them to see how good they are and there EXACTLY like K&N but with a "spectre" badge crimped on one of the pleats of the filter
got the filter out of my car and compared them .. the width was the same
so this is what I did .. cut the filter (hang in there, dont flame me yet) to the right size but left a 1/4" at the end .. cut the other end of the filter off what I had left (the rubber part and one pleat of the actual filter)
it was a snug fit putting both pieces down in the holder so the gasket part pressed together ..then got a piece of sheet metal and cut it to the right size to crimp the end pleats together where I cut the filter and removed a section (the 03 to 06 filter is just longer)
fit very snuggly into the car .. drove it around the block pretty hard and checked them .. looked exactly like when I put them in ..
so if anyone is a little handy and wants to save $80 from buying "K&N" filters for a 07/08 350z .. just order the "spectre" $22 filters from summit and spend 5 minutes cutting and crimping them to make them the right size
now flame on

.. if there is any power gains its probably not much like 4hp .. I'll find out if theres any change in mpg over the next week or so .. ive been averaging 21.5mpg to work and back over the last 4 months with stock air filters (almost a 100 mile commute every day)
I did noticed a increase in intake noise if you rev it when parked and seems to rev a little more freely
was going to get the injen intake but work has dropped off alot the last two weeks (I'm a painter at a body shop .. work goes up and down often)
but for now I'll stick with a drop in performance filter like the K&N .. they possibly add a few hp and are washable
just changed my oil at 10,000 miles, air filters looked a little dirty, and I had a $15 summit gift card
compared the SPECTRE air filters to my K&N in my camaro and they look identical .. wouldnt be surprised if their all made in the same factory
