Well, I'm off for the weekend. Took some holiday time, since I haven't had any break since I got out here to do residency, and so I'm getting the eff out of the city (even though I love it) for my favorite kind of vacation: me, a road map, the car, and no one in the passenger seat to nag in my ear. Destination: it doesn't matter, but it'll be at least a good 1000 km away.
I'm sure you BC natives have probably already seen and done all this before, but this is new to me, and I feel like a kid in a candy shop (I love travelling). If anyone has any suggestions, recommendations, or advice on road conditions, I'm all ears. Right now it looks like I might head up the Squamish Valley, or go to Pemberton and then north from their into the Meadows and follow the Lilloet River. Hope the weather holds, but even then.... as long as it's not torrential, it doesn't matter much to me. And since I'm still on stock rims and tires, I'm not too worried about dirtying them up.
Giddy-up!

Unfortunately to drive 1000km anywhere from here is either North or East... unless you want to catch a ferry or deal with border traffic.
A great drive which involves 4 ferry rides and lots of great roads is the Sunshine Coast-North Vancouver Island Circle. You can do it in reverse but here are the basics:
1. Drive to Horseshoe Bay and take ferry to Langdale.
2. Head north on Sunshine Coast highway 101 to Earl's Cove
3. Take ferry to Saltery Bay and drive north to Powell River.
4. From Powell river take ferry to Comox on Vancouver Island
5. Drive south on Island highway to Nanaimo (or Victoria if you want to make a bigger loop)
6. Take ferry back to Horseshoe Bay (Tswawassen for Victoria)
It takes a full weekend to make the circuit but it has a lot of straights and twisties.. lots of great scenery... and lots of good places to eat

Thanks for the suggestions. I got back late Saturday from my trip... took all of Sunday to recover (the drive back was incredibly stressful) and right now I'm on call at BCCW, so hopefully tomorrow I'll have the travellog and photos up.
