Matching tire size to wheel size
I just received my wheels. They are 8.5 front and 9.5 rear 18s. I went to Tire Rack to see what sizes are recommended for wheels of this size. I get different sizes for different wheels of the same size. It returns 225/45F by 245/45R for one type of wheel of the same size as I have and 225/45F by 265/40R.
I am a little confused. I estimated I would need 245/40F by 275/40R. Is there a definitive way of matching/sizing tires?

Probably the easiest way to find something on Tire Rack is do a search by tire manufacturer. Don't fill in the information on your vehicle or rim size. Just select a manufacture you are interested in, select the tire by what you expect and then look at the specification. It could be a LONG list, but scroll down until you get to 18" size and go from there. You should see a column that tells you what rim width that tire will fit on. Check the front/rear diameter to insure stagger is met.
If that fails to provide the information you need, call: Reggie at Tire Rack and give him the information you posted and he will come back with what will fit. His number at Tire Rack is: 800-428-8355 EXT. 644

I'd personally recommend a 255/40/18 on the front, and a 275/40/18 on the rear. A 245 in the front just gives the car too much understeer in my opinion. After I upgraded to 255's in the front, it helped balance the car out just right. Additionally, a 255/40/18 is the same diameter as the stock front tire, while a 245/40/18 is a bit shorter. It's always good to match the diameters to stock if possible.
As far as Tire Rack's tire size recommendations, they are indeed way off base much of the time. Not sure why it does that. Sometimes it's right on, and other times it just pulls out crazy numbers.
