Default Tire Stagger and TCS: need help

Nissan just sponsored my third set of RE040s on the front at 26,000 miles thanks to feathering. Needed to replace the backs also, these for the first time. Guy at Discount Tire had two returned Goodyear F1 GS-D3s - the exact tire I wanted - basically new in a 255/40/17, sold them to me for half price.

I'm sure you're seeing the problem by this point. I now have 225/50s on the front and 255/40s on the rear...my TCS is hatin on me.

Obviously I have two options: swap the rears for another size or buy new for the front. Assuming I'm cheap and don't want to throw away the new tires Nissan gave me, what sizes can I go with on the back and get the appropriate stagger to resolve the TCS issue?

I can obviously go with the stock size, but assuming I want to go bigger, per my math a 255/45 on the back would result in a larger diameter than the fronts, but not quite the difference of the stock setup.

Anyone know if this would eliminate or even reduce my TCS issue?

Im running SAME diameter back and front without any issues on my Z, i have 26.5" diameter wheels back and front (stock is 26.0" front and 26.7" rear), the rears might even be alittle bit smaller diameter due to that the tire is alot more streched on the rear then on the front due to the wide rear rim.

Im running 275/30/20 Continental tires on 20x9" front and 20x10.5" rear wheels.

IMO the traction control and antislide etc works even better now IMO and is more smooth (i get abit less pissed every timei notice i have forgotten to switch it off... hehe)

I think the general rule is that you shouldnt change the diameter by more the 3% on each axel.

Default Any further input?

Thanks Roggan.

Need to order today, trying decide between going with stock 235/50 or trying 255/45s which would make the backs .1" bigger in diameter than the fronts. Not sure if that's enough stagger, the stock setup is .3" bigger in back.

Anyone know if that will work or have other ideas??

Like i said im running identical size front and rear with possibly slightly SMALLER diameter rear without any problems, IMO the traction control is acctually working more smoothly now.

You current setup is:
Front 225/50/17: 25.86" (0.14" smaller then stock)
Rear: 255/40/17: 25.03" (1.60" smaller then stock)

I would imagine that this could cause problems since its quite "extreme" diff in the "wrong" way (fronts larger then rears)

Your new thought setup:
Front 235/50/17: 26.25" (0.25" larger then stock)
Rear: 255/45/17: 26.04" (0.66" smaller then stock)

Still diameter staggered "incorrectly", how wide are your rims? Try a 265 rear instead it would then be 0.2" larger then the front and closer to stock diameter, it would also give you a slimmer gap in the rear arch.

I have the stock 17" X 7.5" wheels on the front and 17" X 8" on the rear.

Sounds like you're saying if I get the 255/45s for the rear, I'll be okay. Using the Miata tire calculator that everyone on this site uses, switching to 255/45s on the rear will result in a slightly larger overall diameter than the 225/50 stock tires in the front, which I'm hoping will be sufficient.

Thanks for your help.

I have 245/45/17 on the front and 255/45/17 on the back they work great. I don't have the wheel stagger here in front of me, but could get it for you if you need it.

Default Ordered 245/40s for front

Decided to keep the 255/40s on the back and dump the RE040s Nissan gave me for 245/40s in front. Discount Tire's giving me $100 for the RE040s, so in total I'm coming out okay.

Stagger will be the same as stock = .3":

245/40s = 24.7"
255/40s = 25.0"

Hopefully that alleviates my TCS issue.

These are pretty low profile so I'm not sure how they'll look, but the backs look okay so I'm hoping for the same in the front.

Anybody have 40s on a 17" rim?
