I am also interested in doing this, but for best results does it have to be done professionally? I know that Craftsman (i work at sears :[ ) just came out with a powdercoating system for $189 and there are 30 different colors to choose from... i have no experience with powdercoating, is it like painting where you have to know what your doing to make it look good? (it makes it seem in the literature on the craftsman that you can do powdercoating yourself and can't really go wrong, but of course they want you and me to think that).

yeah i wouldnt powdercoat them yourself. you have to spray the powder evenly then put them in an oven to bake on and heat activate then you have to clear coat it. painting if you can spray paint pretty well you can do it yourself. otherwise spend the small amt to have it done or get a friend whos good to do it.

My dad got an extra oven for his warehouse and DIY Powdercoat kit from an auto suply mag (probably same kit as Sears) and just started practicing. Thing is he usually has to bead blast any paint or coating originally on metal (has a bead blaster luckily though) and you have to have a big enough oven to fit a rim our size. But it's fairly easy once you practice a little bit and there are tons of colors to choose from. As far as applying evenly, you hook up a ground of some sort and the charge on the metal (not sure exactly) holds the powdercoat before baking.

So if you get that Dupont paint.....any issues with chipping or anything? Also, can yu just get the clearcoat from Walmart or do you really need to get a really good one? Finally, Can you see the brake dust like you can on the stock rims with the silver color or do you really even notice it anymore? (I'm talking about stock pads of course)

you wont notice it if you paint the wheels black. the auto part store will have the clear coat for the wheels as well as the paint so just use that paint and clear would be my suggestion.
