Default Question on replacing my rear stock RE040's

I know that not many people have good things to say about these tires, but my fronts have TONS of tread left and my backs are bald! I bought the car used so I guess the previous owner had alot of fun! (BTW I have a track model)

Any ways I have two questions, if I stick with the RE040's I notices that the 255/45/18 overall diameter is 26.9 and the 245/45/18 overall diameter is 26.7. Now my question is, will that .2 of an inch make a noticeable difference at all on my speedo? And will the 255's even fit?

Also I am not up on tires, but is it a big no no to have different sets of tires on the front and back? If it is an option to have a different set on the back what should I go with? I want to stay as cheap as possible, with out getting a crappy tire. I plan to upgrade my rims in the near future so don’t want to spend very much on these tires. TIA for any help!

I don't exactly understand the question. Why not stay with the OEM sizes?

I would prefer to replace all tires at the same time with the same tire. But replacing the tires on one axle you’ll be OK.

If it is an option to have a different set on the back what should I go with? I want to stay as cheap as possible, with out getting a crappy tire.

That's next to impossible. You get what you pay for. Next to your driving skills, tires are the most important “mod.” Don't “budget” such an important safety item.

I figured why not get the 255's in the rear if they fit? Every little bit counts right? BTW do they fit?

I ment I didn’t want any of the SUPER high performance tires like my roommate has on his s2000 that were something like 300 a piece! I didn’t mean I wanted complete crap for tires!

I don’t want to replace the front tires b/c there is just way to much thread to get rid of them.

If I were to get a different type on the rear what would you suggest?

Your right; you do not want to mix brands front/back. Either get OEM backs or replace all four tires.

Ok, then I am going OEM. Now my question becomes will the 255's fit, and will the .2 inch total diameter make any difference on the speedo?

I noticed the OEM tires are expensive for a pretty mediocre tire. Why not pay a little less and get better tires?

You can get whatever tires you want. It shouldn't be a problem just make sure the front 2 and rear 2 are of the same type. Many are **** about putting different tires for the front and rear but its not that big a deal. The POS stockers are ridiculously expensive as well so don't waste your money, especially if you are planning on upgrading. Get some Kumhos to hold you over in the meantime..they will be cheaper and better than stock.

I know they are mediocre, but my fronts have almost full tread! I plan to upgrade me rims eventually so I dont want to get a whole new set. They may be a little bit more expensive but 2 of alittle more expensive is still alot cheaper than 4 less expensive!

jun14scr: What do you mean get the 40 rating? You mean 255/40/18??? the total diameter of that tire is off my more than .2 of an inch I am sure, so why would I want to do that? I am almost positive the 255's will fit, Tirerack says the RE040 255/45/18's will fit 8-9.5 inch wide rims, my track rims are 8.5. I am still wondering if the .2 of an inch is going to make a difference on the speedo, can anyone help with this?

EDIT: the 255/45/18 RE040's are only $230, that isnt to bad?

The 245/45/18's are $220.

OEM Rear tire is 245/45R18
Proposed rear tire is 255/45R18
Speedometer error above

Recommendations are from Consumer Reports.

I don't trust consumer reports at all. What I find interesting though is the Continentals are rated highly over here but are lackluster on tirereack's survey. Wonder who is correct? I've never had an issue with Tirerack..

Oh and I wasn't saying to change all 4 tires by the way. I'm saying make sure the front 2 are same(for the front only) and the rear 2 are the same...meaning you can technically mix and match as long as the tires are the same on each axle...

Tell me what you guys would pick out of this list:

(remember I am going to upgrade rims in alittle over a month)

Nitto 555 - $155 at Discount Tire

Kumho Supra712 - $152 at NTB

Kumho ECSTA ASX - $131 at NTB (price matched from tirerack +15 dollars)

Dunlop FM901 - $128 at Discount Tire

Sumitomo HTR II - $160 at NTB(price matched from tirerack +15 dollars)

I am thinking the nitto is a pretty good choise, read some good reviews on them and there pretty cheap. The dunlop FM901 are HELLA cheap but I am sure there is a good reason.

The guy at NTB got me all excited he said the BF Goodrich G-force 2 were only $119, I was like FOUR PLEASE! Turns out his system was wrong when he called in to get them shipped.

That's quite a selection. Are all the tires that you named summer high performance tires? Are they “W” or better speed rated? Is the load rating 96 or better?

Yes, yes, and yes.

I figure I could get the cheapest, but it has pretty bad reviews. It is just twenty somthing more for a decent tire, and only another twenty more for a good tire. So I was probably going to get either the Nitto 555 or the BFGoodrich G-Force's. Whats your opinions?

If you are planning on going 255/45/18 then go with these. They are really sticky according to most people on this site and very good in rain as well. I will have 4 of these soon. The Toyo's I have right now are really loud and have no grip when hot. Not only that but they feel all wiggly now. You can't go wrong with these tires and you'll still save dollars. All the ones you listed are weak in comparison...

I believe discount tire includes shipping with their quote, but its only ground shipping. Tirerack will come out cheaper in the end even with fedex 3 day shipping....
