How did we end up with such crazy tire sizing?

The diameter is in inches.
The width is in mm.
I figure that both should either be in inches or mm. Is there any rational why these two measurement units are used?

im not sure you have to ask the company.. example 245 is the width in mm, 35 is the % of the width that will give you the thickest of the tires, 19 is size in inch of the wheel.. I don't get it either...lol..

And on a more serous note: wheel diameter and width are in inches. What if like tires, the width was is mm? Then people would not have to ask: Will 255 tires fit my 255 wheels?
