'03 touring 18" to 17" for winter tires ??

My '03 touring model has 18" stock wheels. Will 17" stock fit for the winter ?? I'm thinking more snow tire choices, maybe better "performance" in snow with 17" --anyone try this... I

Shop for snow tires and you will quickly find which is more popular either 17 or 18 inches. And yes width matters. A 205 tire will perform better than a 265 tire.

According to the Dealer 17" wont work...

I had the car in for the fuel line recall, the service manager recommends against putting 17" wheels on, the calipers are different for the 18" wheels.
Plan B, I'll just buy some 18" sno tires in the fall.
