Question Consequences of bad offset

I have a question for people with wider aftermarket rims. For the front did you change the offset by half of the increase in width to keep the tire centerline from shifting? I'm guessing that failure to do so would result in adverse changes in handling....swinging the tires instead of turning them.

Can anyone with technical know-how answer this question?
